Canon of Dutch movies as presented by the Nederlands Film Festival

flodder.jpgIt’s canon mania! This time around it’s that most prestigious of Dutch film festivals — the Dutch Film Festival — that has released its list of pivotal Dutch movies of all time (Dutch).

Odd that “Verhoeven lite” Dick Maas is listed with as many films as the maestro himself, and not even with The Lift. Not that this reporter fails to understand entirely. Photo: a screen grab from Maas’ Flodder.

I’m surprised Soldaat Van Orange didn’t make the list…I think it’s a brilliant film and Rutger Hauer and Jeroen Krabbe are both outstanding in their roles.

  2. Orangemaster says:

De Noorderlingen is OK but weird

  3. The MOOK says:

I have to agree with Lola Granola. It’s shocking that Soldaat van Oranje (pardon my pedantic spelling correction) was omitted.

One of the best endings *ever*, so reflexively Dutch. The one fraternity brother who didn’t do anything (join the resistance, become a collaborator, get deported for being Jewish, etc.) is the one other character who survived. And those are the people who make up 99 percent of the population now.

Turks Fruit is good, but in the end it’s just a lot of sex.

  4. Jay Vos says:

Yeah, surprised that Soldaat van Oranje was not included; also Spetters (another film by the director Verhoeven). I’d have also included The Assault/De Aanslag and Antonia’s Line.
