Orangemaster’s favourite stories of 2011
Another year of posting is coming to an end and it’s time to pick our favourite stories of 2011.
We had a lot of stories about cycling and bicycles which were retweeted by many people (thanks!), encouraging us to make a category for them, and a lot of stories about discriminatory and absurd laws and situations. Oh, and some sports news.
- Utrecht openly discriminates against non-Dutch in marathon. The policy caused an international stir and will be changed next year, although the goal, sadly, is to favour Dutch runners so they can win money.
- Netherlands wins first ever baseball world cup. Winning at baseball is a nice change from the media complaining about nearly winning at football.
- Cancer research charity Pink Ribbon donates zero percent to cancer research. It’s good to actually check out who we are giving our money to when we want to do some feel good donating.
- Reporter nicks 30 kg worth of Khadaffi’s stuff, isn’t sorry. He probably did what many people would have done, but he still comes off like a looter.
- Former football super star Ruud Gullit becomes dictator’s coach. This sent shockwaves through the football world and indeed it didn’t last very long.
- ‘Racist’ Dutch carnival song about the Chinese. Anytime anyone now gets offended by racist language they’re too sensitive. That’s the new backlash for 2012.
- New tax law encourages both marriage and divorce. The tax office is always good for a dose of absurdist logic.
- Banks make 125,000 homes unsellable. Banks are nobody’s favourite friend or topic as of late.
- Girl turns 18 becomes an illegal immigrant and is shunned. Sending children back to a country they don’t know when they turn 18 has been a major issue this year, causing all kinds of uproar.
- What have the Nazis ever done for you?. A sober Dutch look at some things the Nazis did that didn’t involve killing people.
- We took a lot of pictures this year, and our Flickr has tons of pictures of the Art Zuid outdoor art project in Amsterdam.
