Pancakes with fries and more in Rotterdam

Last weekend in Paris, a French woman asked me at the dinner table what food was like in the Netherlands. Examining the party of eight around me with a Dutch cook on my right (from Limburg, where they actually enjoy food), I diplomatically answered that the Netherlands have great basic ingredients, but seem to struggle to put them together nicely.

In an environment where snack food goes disco and having a romantic dinner at a junk food chain went viral, here’s a questionable junk food mashup: a pancake with ‘friet speciaal’ (fries topped with chopped onions, mayonnaise and curry ketchup), which can be had at a mini-golf course in Rotterdam.

“It’s not a joke and it’s very tasty,” claims cook Brian de Jong. They call it the ‘pannenkoek Xtra speciaal’, which goes for €7,50 and was in fact inspired by the disco snack food mentioned above. In case you got hit hard by a wayward golfball during your stay, you can also order the pancake Turkish pizza (aka ‘lahmacun’) or the pancake satay.

First national footgolf championship held in Nijmegen

Filed under: Dutch first,Sports by Branko Collin @ 8:30 am

Argyle socks and knee-length shorts, those are apparently part of the dresscode for footgolf, a sport invented by advertising agency Nothing.

Last weekend professional football player Theo Janssen won the first national footgolf championship at the Rijk van Nijmegen golf course, beating his fellow FC Twente attacking midfielder Kenneth Perez. Other participants included PSV striker Danny Koevermans, local boy Roy “the phantom” Makaay and Pierre “Pi-Air” van Hooijdonk.

A wary press, realising the joke might be on them (the jury is still out) covered the event, including public broadcaster NOS:

The sport is just like golf, with the exception that you play a football instead of a golf ball, and you use your feet to play it.

Apropos ‘Nothing,’ the company’s website explains that the name describes the space where ideas come from, but I cannot help but notice that it also neatly covers the emperor’s wardrobe.

Biggest indoor golf venue to be built “somewhere in the Netherlands”

Filed under: Architecture,Sports by Branko Collin @ 7:42 am

One John S. Standing is planning on opening the world’s largest indoor golf centre in 2010, “somewhere in the Netherlands.” The building, shaped like a golf club, is designed by architects Zwarts & Jansma from Amsterdam who’ve worked on large sports venues before. The “head” would house the golfing facilities whereas the “shaft” would contain a hotel.

Some 20 golf simulators, a rooftop driving range with 34 bays, a restaurant, a shop, and 14,000 square meters of synthetic grass to practice one’s short game complete the picture. The centre would be called Indoor Golf Arena. According to Gizmag.com, “the location of the center has not yet been finalized, but […] talks are underway with local councils in The Netherlands […] to establish a site for the facility which is expected to attract up to 150,000 visitors a year.”
