Karel Appel sculpture discovered on television show

The Dutch version of British television show ‘Antiques Roadshow’ called ‘Tussen Kunst en Kitsch’ (‘Between Art and Kitsch’), has kicked off their new season with the discovery of an early work by Dutch artist Karel Appel made around 1948.

The artwork features the relief of a child figure made out of a door and was bought on the Waterlooplein flea market in Amsterdam probably from Appel himself. The owner paid 5 guilders (2,30 euro) for it and is worth somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 euro. At that time Appel was quite broke and used materials from around the house to create his works.

In 2012 we wrote about a warehouse with 400 works by Appel found in the UK.

A warehouse full of works by Karel Appel found in the UK

Reported as missing or stolen long ago, more than 400 works by Dutch painter, sculptor and poet Karel Appel were found in a bunch of crates, in a British warehouse.

The artist, who died in 2006 at age 85, was one of the founders of the Cobra movement. Just before he died in 2006, he designed a postage stamp for an exhibition on visual artists entitled ‘Kunst’ (‘Art’), the last work of art he ever made.

Now we wait and soon find out what kind of goodies we missed.

The reality of artist Karel Appel

While 24oranges crew is slowly getting ready for the holidays (traditional food and poker with people of five nationalities and three continents), enjoy this 14-minute legendary documentary from 1962 about artist Karel Appel entitled ‘De werkelijkheid van Karel Appel’ ‘(The reality of Karel Appel’) by Dutch journalist and filmmaker Jan Vrijman.

It was filmed in France and has some French in it at the beginning, with Dutch commentary by Karel Appel himself and an English translation. It also features music by Appel himself and Dizzy Gillespie.

Dutch art goes for record amount

On 8 March, Sotheby’s auction house in Amsterdam auctioned off Dutch art belonging to cigarette makers BAT (British American Tobacco) to the tune of a record 13.6 million euro, the highest total for an art auction in the Netherlands. All but four of the 161 lots offered in Amsterdam found buyers.

Back in October 2008 we posted about a major art sale due to cigarette factory closing in Zevenaar, which is where some of these works used to hang, like Karel Appel’s ‘Tête Tragique’ (shown here), a 1961 oil on canvas, which sold for close to 493,000 euro.
