Dutch students make dart containing Go Pro camera

Filed under: Film,Gadgets by Orangemaster @ 5:23 pm

Three students from the University of Twente, Nick Schijvens, Pablo Trautwein and Mark de Boer, have developed a big plastic dart with a Go Pro camera inside it, called ‘Throw your Go Pro’, made by their startup, AER. The idea was to get the most out of a GoPro camera and bring it onto the market, with some help from crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. The money seemed to be pouring in, with close to 59,000 euro as I write this – their goal is 70,000 euro in another 27 days, which sounds like it will hit the mark.

The gadget has a GoPro mounted into a flying dart which you can throw into the air to create cool aerial footage. Have a look yourself at what AER have shot on their instragram.

Magnetic suspension makes for levitating lamp

Filed under: Design by Orangemaster @ 2:11 pm

Lunaluxx

The Lunaluxx lamp is an atmospheric lamp that is sure to replace any centrepiece or help start any dinner conversation. “By combining both magnetic suspension and remote-phosphor lightning technologies, a light emitting disc is freely suspended in mid air.”

The levitating disc looks like a little spaceship, and once it’s in place, the light comes on. The Lunaluxx is easy to turn on and off, although I don’t know what one does with the disc when the light is turned off, as that requires making sure a human or animal doesn’t make off with it or misplace it.

It does look great and original, designed by Elivatix in Eindhoven, a hotbed of Dutch design and lamps.

Questionable Dutch Kickstarter projects

Filed under: General,Music,Technology,Weird by Orangemaster @ 3:24 pm

Of course, there are some amazing ideas floating around in the Netherlands, but there will always be some ‘non-starters’ because anybody can ask for money for anything. Just the spelling mistakes are like bushwhacking through a forest of flies. Here is a small selection of Kickstarter projects that make you wonder:

– A workshop space only for men and ‘males’, but freely using the world ‘everybody’.
Half blind boy.

– A female-fronted metal album because just a band would mean it was ‘male’ and automatically good.
How to hit the wrong chord.

– A self-cleaning shower cabin – I want to believe!
‘Only a man would come up a way not to clean’ cliché.

– An app that shows you all the places Michael Jackson has been. Are you LOL, too?
Give me Elvis instead.

– Someone is building a TARDIS!
This could actually be pretty cool.

Sad Dutch Kickstarter projects are sad

The Dutch have had their own Kickstarter site for a few months now and I have seen many interesting projects get the funding they probably deserve. However, they are a lot of ‘non-starters’ on the site because anybody can ask for money and hope for the best without being serious. The projects that get my attention usually fall into four categories: the good ones that usually get funded, the ones that don’t get funded or get insufficient funding, the ones nobody gives a toss about but could be serious, and the jokey ones. Let’s have a look at the last two categories, the losers and the jokers:

– ‘I need a computer to review stuff on the Internet and become a YouTuber’.
How about you get a job? It would go faster, too.

– Two guys want to deliver apple pie to their friend for his 17th birthday, but would rather someone else pays for it.
You can’t find 5-10 euro for your best friend? Ouch.

– ‘I make music. To make these tracks, I need money. You want to spend money on music’
It sounds more like you don’t want to spend money on music…

– Someone want to sell ‘trustee rings’ to prove their ‘fidelity’ and got 1 euro so far.
They have GPS and Wi-Fi to track your partner. Stalker alert!

– A statue for Louis van Gaal, but only if the Netherlands wins the World Cup, which it didn’t.
Nice try.

– Frying up extreme eggs.
Ever since a potato salad got funded, Kickstarter is full of food-related projects.

– ‘A story about a boy that lives in a crappy world.’
Buy a diary, write it down and take up drinking like the rest of us.

Kickstarter kicks off in the Netherlands

Filed under: Film,Gaming,Photography,Sports,Technology by Orangemaster @ 9:55 pm

On Tuesday April 29 crowdfunding website Kickstarter now features a page for the Netherlands. Before then, Dutch residents with good ideas had to register their project through another country like the United States. Since then, about 30 new project ideas have popped up on the Dutch page, while the rest are projects that were around when they had to circumvent the country issue. And just like in other countries, Kickstarter takes 5% off the top when and if projects achieve their financial goal.

One of them was more fun than anything else: the ‘Fish on wheels’ (on Kickstarter). Other projects include lots of board games, music, tech, film and inventions.

Tip to the lightbulbs: please let someone check your English if you want to be taken seriously.
