Hanging off a Dutch train is dangerous

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 3:58 pm

There’s possibly (but hopefully not) a new trend in jackass land, and it’s about hanging onto a moving train on the outside like James Bond, but then for real and purely for shock value.

The Climbing Dutchman is pissing off Dutch rail operator ProRail with his extremely dangerous stunts, but he couldn’t care less, and has done it before. While ProRail says that this is ‘intolerable behaviour and against the law’ and has filed a complaint with the police, The Climbing Dutchman’s answer was, “go ahead and complain to the police again”, implying that he doesn’t think he’ll ever be caught.

ProRail is trying to have this video deleted from YouTube, but of course, it can still easily be found, which says a lot about YouTube.

Update December 2018: new video, as the old one had been deleted.

Watching paint not dry and move around to music

Filed under: Art,Music by Orangemaster @ 10:56 am

Run-Away

Dutch band Jo Goes Hunting’s latest video ‘Run Away’ features models covered in paint by Amsterdam-based material designer Shai Langen.

Langen was asked for something ‘less conventional’ and came up with models dripping of paint, an effect that was not easy to achieve: a mixture of wallpaper paste and acrylic paint chosen as a simple technique that would let the material itself create movement.

The headpieces were made from lacquered and reinforced cardboard, and although one of the oval-shaped pieces shown is almost as large as the model’s body, many of them were scrapped. I can imagine they didn’t stay in place that easily, either.

The black and white patterns created on the models has a quality that makes you want to look and see what the next pattern will be. ‘After applying paste, I smeared paint onto the models’ bodies using cocktail sticks and rollers to create various patterns,’ explains Langen.

Americans try and sing Dutch summer hit

Filed under: Music by Orangemaster @ 5:35 pm

To all the unilingual English speakers who keep saying they can’t learn Dutch after years of being here, maybe you should take a page from these American kids: fake it until it sounds vaguely Dutch. Top tip: don’t be afraid of sounding or looking stupid, either. Half way through the video the guys get asked questions about the song, a bit like a Dutch exam, but with more adult content.

‘Drank & Drugs’ (‘Booze and Drugs’) by Lil Kleine & Ronnie Flex is going viral, and we’re joining in. The first guy can at least says something remotely Dutch on the beat, while the second guy can’t seem to get it right. OK, the ‘spaghetti’ bit is funny.

It’s not ‘impossible to translate’ as the link suggests, considering many words are Dutchified English words anyway, but booze, drugs and bitches (“if they are bitches,” says the first guy) is common fare, pardon the pun.

And for the fans, here’s the original version:

Seasoned Arnhem stop motion filmmaker Mascha Halberstad is up for a Berlin Music Video Award 2015 thanks to a video she made for the UK band The Prodigy of their song ‘Wild Frontier’. Frontman Liam Howlett asked her personally to make the video, and according to De Gelderlander, she is a favourite to win the German award.

Featured on the album ‘The Day Is My Enemy’ from February 2015, here’s ‘Wild Frontier’:

Ellen Schippers’ foggy portraits of women

Filed under: Art,Photography by Branko Collin @ 9:30 am

snowwhite-still-ellen-schippersI went to check out a small art fair today that I was told had photos by Danielle van Zadelhoff (not the exhibition I wrote about last week, but also in Amsterdam).

Zadelhoff’s photos weren’t there, but instead I saw photographs by Ellen Schippers, Bas Bogaerts, Gabriele Vierte and Janet de Graaf. I may show you works by the latter three later, but today I recommend you check out the works of Ellen Schippers (some may be NSFW).

Schippers makes photographic portraits that have a painting-like quality because everything is blurry without being out of focus. I don’t know how she creates this look, but if I had to guess I would say she positions her subjects behind fogged up screens. The work shown here is called Snow White. I am not sure if this a photo or a still of one of her videos, but does it matter?

Ellen Schippers is a multi-disciplinary artist from Amsterdam who started out as a performer in art galleries and theatres.

The Hoff sings Fresh Prince theme tune with a twist

Filed under: Art,Shows by Branko Collin @ 2:25 pm

the-rip-hoff-sc-matthijs-vlotRotterdam-based video artist Matthijs Vlot created this clip of David Hasselhoff singing the theme tune to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air by splicing together clips from several shows the actor was in, including Knight Rider and Bay Watch.

I’ve seen this format before, but Vlot adds a twist. What the twist is you will have to see for yourself.

Apparently Hasselhoff tweeted “Amazing clip!” upon watching the video. More videos from Vlot can be found on his website, mattatjeoorlog.nl (a pun on ‘pattatje oorlog’, fries with peanut sauce and mayonnaise). The name of the video, The Rip-Hoff pt. 1, suggests there’s another video involving The Hoff in the making.

A sample of the upcoming Queen’s Day celebrations

Filed under: General by Branko Collin @ 3:59 pm

Utrecht based computer science professor Wolfgang Hürst shot this video last year of the party boats in Amsterdam during Queen’s Day. It’s definitely my favourite video of that day. I think the images combine very well with the music (“Ashes of Time” by Fool’s Chaos).

I will be enjoying Queen’s Day (April 30) myself as always by dipping into the nation-wide garage sale, and hope to score some glass for my camera. Specifically, any wide-angle lenses for under ten euro will get my attention.

Sugar and soul with Laura Vane & The Vipertones

Filed under: Music by Orangemaster @ 3:41 pm

Just released today, the official video of the song ‘Capsize’ from their second album Sugar Fix (out in a few days) by Dutch-British new soul band Laura Vane & The Vipertones.

“Laura is the chocolate, the Vipertones are the cream, this is the sugar fix.”

Disclaimer: I know how hard these guys and gals work and I wish them a big cherry on top of their future success.

Favourite 24oranges facts of 2010

Filed under: General by Orangemaster @ 3:02 pm

I noticed a few neat things this year while working on 24oranges and I want to share them you:

– Our most used Flickr photos are by Peter de Wit, aka FaceMePLS. He has great everyday Dutch stuff that we just can’t seem to get enough of.

– Our most popular Flickr photos are Red thumbtack and Red thumbtack 2, followed by Old books. The message seems to be that simple, everyday objects are what people really like. Co-blogger Branko has taken most of the pictures, he has a fancy DSLR camera while I go through life with a small pocket thingy.

– Our most popular tag is ‘Amsterdam’ because that is where we live, followed by ‘Rotterdam’ and a tie for third place: ‘Groningen’, ‘football’ and ‘law’.

– We’ve added some categories this year (or late last year): ‘photography’, ‘bicycles’ and ‘sustainability’, three topics that come up often.

– We started a Facebook group that has news other than on the blog, with a few exceptions. A big thank you to the 140 members for joining!

– We had our best month yet in November 2010 with 23,562 unique visitors. A big thanks to Global Post and many other sites for linking to us.

Our resolutions include more of our own pictures, a new header (we need sun and oranges at the same time), more videos, (join our 24OrangesTV channel) and one day hopefully more co-bloggers.

Thanks to everyone who submitted and forwarded stories, and took the time to comment on our postings, you make us want to keep going. Cheers!
