On 29 April at the stroke of midnight, Waterlooplein in Amsterdam will be the place to be to drool at very expensive supercars in the name of the Gumball 3000 2007. Rumour has it there will be three (!) Bugatti Veyrons, a limousine based on the Ferrari 360 Modena, a Mansory Rolls-Royce Phantom and a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition. There will also be enough Porsches, Ferraris and Lamborghinis to go around. In seven days, participants roar out of London, go through Western Europe and the Balkans to finally end up back in London for the finish.

Crazy new restaurant concept

Filed under: Food & Drink,General by Orangemaster @ 1:00 pm
freud restaurant

Not yet listed in the Iens or Special Bite restaurant guides, the mayor of Amsterdam Job Cohen opened and waited on tables yesterday at a new Amsterdam restaurant called Freud. Why the brouhaha? The restaurant, founded by psychologist Renske Kastelein and cooking instructor Gerda Hahn, is run by people with psychiatric problems. Their slogan translates to “Insanely delicious food”. “The staff here can’t get a job anywhere, but they function just fine, which is what they can prove here”, Hahn explains.

Action group cuts down advertising forest

Filed under: General by Orangemaster @ 7:51 pm

The idea of a ‘visual assault’ was taken quite literally by an action group who got rid of some of the posters and put up some of their own last night. Here, you can read ‘Amsterdam, free of adverstising’. They claim – as many people already believe, if you ask around – that “the advertising firm in question is working on the further commercialisation of the city, destroying the charactertisitc street image.” Translation: nobody really likes this stunt and everybody thinks it’s ugly.

A Labour Party politican of De Pijp neighbourhood told 24oranges that this entire incident will be discussed in the next city district council meeting.

In your face advertising

Heinekenplein

Until April 6, the Marie Heinekenplein in Amsterdam will feature a forest of adverts from the firm JC Decaux, which have been placed there for a contest. Nevermind the fact that the neighborhood ‘freaked out’ as soon as they saw this ‘visual assault’ on their otherwise nice square, 24oranges was called up and told to go and see for themselves.

I suppose you too can vote for the best advert in the hopes of winning a trip to Paris.

Amsterdam is famous for its wonderful canals, the Van Gogh museum, the flower market, the … ah, who are we kidding, when you go to Amsterdam, you visit the Red Light District. If you have been to the Red Light District before, but shyness or prudishness, or even plain old out-of-pocketness have stopped you from availing yourself of the services of a prostitute, or from watching an erotic show, now’s your chance to look behind the famous red-lit windows. On Saturday March 31 from noon to 6 p.m., the Prostitutie Informatie Centrum will hold an open house (Dutch) at the Red Light District. You’ll be able to visit prostitutes’ rooms, a sex theatre, and even (children, cover your eyes) the Salvation Army.

Follow the fossil route in Amsterdam

Filed under: General,History by Orangemaster @ 9:03 am
fossil1.jpg

It seems that the city of Amsterdam is full of fossils. No, no, no, not old people, real fossils. Many of the stones used on doorsteps, bridges and streets contain fossils that are 350 million years old. Species such as brachiopods and crinoid starfish appear as odd white rings on a black stone background. A new book entitled De Amsterdamse Fossielenroute (‘The Amsterdam Fossil Route’) promises a tour of Amsterdam that doesn’t involve Rembrandt, although the new bridge at the Rembrandt House is apparently full of them.
