A Martin Luther King Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded yesterday in Amsterdam to the founders of the Dutch Food Bank, Sjaak and Clara Sies, presented to them by Isaac Newton Ferris, a nephew of the assassinated US African American civil rights activist. The award is intended as a token of appreciation for those who unselfishly spread Dr King’s message of tolerance and equality, and apparently not just in the United States: last year’s award went to Job Cohen, Mayor of Amsterdam.
The initiative of Sjaak and Clara Sies has also helped emphasised that even though many outsiders keep calling the Netherlands “a welfare state”, the couple have clearly shown that this rich country actually has poor people.

This huge steel artwork, entitled ‘Kooi-Met-Geen-Poema-Er-In’ (‘Cage with no puma in it’) by artist Maarten de Reus, won a Dutch Building Award last week. It can be admired in the city of Apeldoorn atop a former garbage dump site. The building contractor of the artwork from Moerkapelle won a National Steel Award in 2008.
The theme of the work, chosen in 2005, refers to puma sightings in the Veluwe woods, which where in fact some sort of big house cat gone wild.

De Kleine Hans (The small Hans) is a brand new photography prize and this time around, the winner is a cat. The award, also referred to as “the world’s biggest small photography prize,” was awarded this week to Mr. Lee, a male cat owned by Juergen Perthold, a German man living in the US. Juergen built a camera that he attached to Mr. Lee’s collar, which takes a picture every minute. The result of many wanderings can be seen on the site.
