Dutch brand Moooi produces ‘impossible’ flower chair

Filed under: Design,Nature by Orangemaster @ 11:00 am

Dutch design brand Moooi has partnered with Argentinian 3D artist Andrés Reisinger to mass-produce his Hortensia chair, also known as “the chair that could not be made”.

Back in 2018, Reisinger designed the chair as a ‘digital’ piece of furniture, but it has now been made into a physical chair covered in 30,000 fabric petals, available in the original pink as well as grey. This chair is said to be the first time that a product designed for the digital world has gone into mass production. The updated version being released by Moooi features a steel frame, rather than wood, covered in injection-moulded foam, while using lightweight polyester fabric laser-cut into long, scalloped strips that are then bunched together into clusters of 40 petals each. Moooi used special sewing machines to sew the petal modules onto a thick, elastic backing textile that is then wrapped around the chair.

“The Hortensia was considered impossible to produce – and yet here we are,” said Moooi CEO Robin Bevers.

Dutch designer launches app against knock-offs

Filed under: Design,Technology by Orangemaster @ 2:21 pm

Dutch furniture and interior design company Moooi has launched their own app, so that customers can verify the authenticity of the products they buy from the company. Moooi’s products all have a unique digital identity in the shape of a flower that customers can scan, which contains a wireless chip. Moooi has described it as “a tiny digital superhero that provides Moooi products with an authentic digital identity.”

Moooi launched the initiative as a way of helping their customers in the face of a growing number of counterfeits. At present, many companies stick holograms on their products, rely on customs control border forces to check or even using DNA spray. “But all these solutions are only really doable by people working at the border, so you’re not protecting average customers,” explained Jan Haarhuis, a specialist in customer experience at Moooi. The app is available for Android and iPhone.

Launched by Casper Vissers, former owner of Dutch design brand Moooi, new furniture and lighting brand Revised has recently presented Dutch designer Sjoerd Vroonland’s collection made from traditional materials including solid wood of oak and walnut, stone, glass, steel and marble, all with nice rounded corners and edges.

The collection features influences from the early 20th century as seen by Vissers and his wife, Suzy Vissers, of pieces of furniture photographed in 35 countries at hotels, calling it “The craft you could say British and Italian with a slightly Japanese influence.” Casper Vissers said that Sjoerd Vroonland understood what he was aiming for and instead of just a few pieces, launched an entire collection.

The products are purposely manufactured in factories across Europe, with suppliers based in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Lithuania. “Perhaps we could get it made cheaper further away, but we have to start driving electric cars, we need to eat less meat and we should not ship from one end of the world to the other,” Vissers explains.

Breda-based Dutch design studio Moooi is launching a new company called Moooi Carpets with an inaugural collection of photo-realistic designs by Studio Job, Ross Lovegrove, Neri & Hu (as shown above) and many more.

Moooi Carpets explains that it uses advanced technology to print designs directly onto carpet at a higher definition than ever before. Its printing plant will be able to print everything from rugs to full-width fitted carpet as well as one-off designs. “It’s the reinvention of the carpet,” says Moooi CEO Casper Vissers.

“The carpets are produced using a giant machine that measures 100 metres long. Its size allows it to print designs up to four metres wide in unlimited colours, without having to change the dye injectors in its Chromojet printer.”
