Watch a documentary on the Ice Man

Filed under: Science,Weird by Orangemaster @ 2:51 pm

Ice Man Wim Hof is the definition of cool. He is able to control some of his body’s systems, which is not usually possible. He also claims he can teach his methods to anybody and lets scientists poke and prod him on the regular.

Can everybody do what Ice Man does following his method or is that wishful thinking? Watch the video, in English, with some English subtitles.

Ice Man controls some of his body’s systems

Filed under: Science,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:54 am

Ice Man Wim Hof holds many ice-related records, including one he broke just last week in Lapland, Finland: he walked 10 kilometers uphill in his bare feet and shorts in -10 degrees celsius in 56 minutes without having trained for it.

A while back we told about Dutch scientists who wanted to poke and prod him to find out what makes him so special, although Hof himself attributes his feats to Tummo meditaion.

The quick and dirty version is that Hof can control his central nervous system through his meditation, blocking out feelings of cold and also in the process his immune system, so that he doesn’t get sick. The boffins experimented on 240 people and Hof’s results were remarkably different.

A big Happy Birdthday to Wim Hof who turned 52 today, and who is now certified a really cool freak of nature. And even if you do this kind of meditation, chances are you won’t achieve any of the same results.

The Ice Man breaks his own ice sitting record

Filed under: Dutch first,Science,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:57 am

On Saturday in Utrecht’s busiest shopping mall, Wim Hof, aka the Ice Man, broke his record of sitting in ice for 1 hour and 13 minutes by a whopping 31 minutes 23 seconds (1 h 44 min 23 sec).

Back in May, after having put Hof through tests, two Dutch scientists in Nijmegen concluded that what he can do “is medically impossible”.

He’s just the definition of cool.

The Ice Man is a freak of nature

Filed under: Nature,Weird by Orangemaster @ 3:45 pm

Wim Hof (aka the Ice Man) holds many records, including being able to ‘chill’ in ice for 1 hour and 13 minutes. Last week, two Dutch scientists tried to measure his bodily responses to cold and concluded that what he can do “is medically impossible”. The more I read up on this, the more I realise that crediting Tummo-meditaion for his talent is just a freaky coincidence.

Professor Maria Hopman explains that Hof is apparently able to influence his nervous system, which is supposed to be impossible. Hof also appears to be able to consciously open and close his blood vessels. Professor Mihai Netea has shown that Hof’s blood cells react differently than normal blood cells even after six days.

In 2009, Wim completed a full marathon of 42,195 kilometres above the polar circle in Finland in temperatures close to -20 degrees. Watch the video.

Although Iceman Wim Hof has decided to stop climbing Mount Everest, the rest of his crew continued to climb yesterday and today. Hof achieved a new world record of 7,400 metres dressed only in shorts. Expedition leader Werner de Jong together with climber Robert has arrived at Camp 2 at 7,750 metres, where the death zone begins. Robert, the third Dutch climber of the team has arrived at Camp 3 at 8,350 metres and is resting in order to try and reach the top.
