‘Cheat software’ is the Dutch word of the year 2015

Filed under: Automobiles,General,Technology by Orangemaster @ 10:40 am

Inspired by the Volkswagen emissions scandal, ‘sjoemelsoftware’ (‘cheat software’) was crowned Dutch word of the year 2015 today, with 48% of the votes. The definition is ‘software to positively influence the test results of a device, like software used in cars to make carbon dioxide emissions appear more favourable’. Since compound words work well in Dutch, the word ‘sjoemel’ can be coupled with a whole bunch of other words to imply something has been tampered with to defeat a device, a bit like a copper penny in the electricity meter.

Dutch kids have been creative this year, coming up with ‘Tinderellasyndroom’ (‘Tinderella syndrome’), with 34% of the votes for youth word of the year. The word means ‘young people who cannot flirt in real life and depend on mobile apps like Tinder’. What’s odd is that ‘Tinderella’ in English already was a woman found on Tinder presumably by a man, while the Cinderella complex defines an unconscious desire for women to be taken care of by others, usually men. ‘Tinderellasyndroom’ would appear to imply that boys can’t flirt, if we assume that boys usually initiate flirting online in the heterosexual sphere. I would read this new word as mainly boys looking for passive, willing women on Tinder-like apps instead of in real life.

Swiping the Tinder app with meat fits the bill

Filed under: Art,Technology by Orangemaster @ 9:40 am

Tinder

A Dutch art installation entitled ‘Tender’ created by four students at Leiden University features a piece of meat (pork?) that swipes profiles approvingly in a fake version of the popular dating app Tinder. The artwork is set to debut at the Habitat art exhibition in Amsterdam this weekend.

In casual Dutch, ‘checking people out’ is called ‘vleeskeuren’, which literally means ‘to check out the meat’. The creators have an actual piece of meat doing that for them in the video: by swiping right, the ‘user’ is approving all the profiles it swipes, going for a match, but maybe all ‘porky’ will get is a flash in the pan. The four students are probably guys because their app is searching for women, so they’ll get bikinis and sunglasses but miss out on guys petting tigers and holding fish — take my word for it.

Just last month Tinder reunited a brother and sister both searching for a ‘sex date’.

Siblings reunite through Tinder after 16 years

Filed under: Online,Weird by Orangemaster @ 1:46 pm

Tinder

Dutch siblings Erik (24) and Josephine (22) lost track of each other when their parents split up in 1999, as Josephine stayed in Breda with her mom while Erik and his twin brother Maarten went to live in Belgium.

Sixteen years later Erik and Josephine ‘swiped right’ on dating app Tinder, matched up, and started flirting. However, Erik felt that something was off and eventually shared his suspicions with others online. Erik and Josephine talked about their childhood, and then the pieces fell into place: they were family. They met up in Tilburg and reconnected. Twin brother Maarten is also happy about
the reunion.

Tinder-style voting for States-provincial elections

Filed under: General,Technology by Orangemaster @ 6:16 pm

Talk show host Arjan Lubach has devised a Tinder-style voting app made for fun to help undecided voters for the upcoming States-provincial elections. The States-provincial or ‘Provinciale Staten’ in Dutch are the provincial parliament and legislative assembly in each of the 12 Dutch provinces.

With ‘StemTinder’ (‘Tinder Voting’) you can swipe left or right and find the political party match for you. It’s not the national elections, so why not vote on looks? And there’s nothing wrong with candidates trying to look trustworthy to win votes.
