I think I can often tell if someone is only buying food for themselves, but that means absolutely nothing about the state of their love live. Maybe because Valentine’s Day is around the corner or spring, or both did the Jumbo supermarket in Woerden, Utrecht decide to let singles use pink shopping baskets to advertise their singledom. Frozen pizzas and beer it is, then. Or rice crackers, almond milk and tampons, that sort of thing.
Jumbo says it has done this before and that it was a success. How on earth they can claim it was a success if they have no way of knowing if it was, except possibly that nobody complained about it. By Dutch standards, that would indeed be a major success.

A young couple recently decided to have a romantic dinner at McDonald’s in downtown Rotterdam. The manager was very relaxed about it and let the couple use the table cloth, candles, plates and utensils they brought with them. “It looked like a fancy picnic”.
Sure people stared and yes the manager snapped a picture for social media. You just know this is going to happen again somewhere soon.
Until now my idea of a Dutch dinner for two at McDonald’s looks more like this advert from 2010 where ‘going Dutch’ kills the mood even more than having to eat junk food.

Dutch siblings Erik (24) and Josephine (22) lost track of each other when their parents split up in 1999, as Josephine stayed in Breda with her mom while Erik and his twin brother Maarten went to live in Belgium.
Sixteen years later Erik and Josephine ‘swiped right’ on dating app Tinder, matched up, and started flirting. However, Erik felt that something was off and eventually shared his suspicions with others online. Erik and Josephine talked about their childhood, and then the pieces fell into place: they were family. They met up in Tilburg and reconnected. Twin brother Maarten is also happy about

Here we go again: another reality show on yet another ‘deserted’ island with yet another bunch of seemingly unattached not too bad looking young people, but this time they are naked. ‘Adam looking for Eve’ (‘Adam zkt. Eva’ in Dutch) is going to hit televisions in 2014 and is considered going ‘back to basics’, that is, instead of hiding behind social media for dating purposes, this show gets it all out in the open very literally.
First of all, I don’t like the title: why can’t Eve look for Adam as well? Does it really have to imply that men chase like cavemen and women are just dumb prey? The naked part is easy shock value and upping the game no matter what the makers say. They’ll put dumb people on the show for sure because that sells very well, naked or not.

Members of dating website Parship have voted the Brabant accent the sexiest, the site reported last month.
The Southern accents (Noord-Brabant and Limburg) are both characterized by ‘soft’ gs (both voiced and unvoiced) that are produced by pronouncing the g more forward in the mouth.
The accents from Limburg and Amsterdam ended second and third in the poll, with men preferring the former and women the latter. The Amsterdam accent is characterized amongst other by a tongue tip r and the devoicing of initial consonants: “de zon in the zee zien zakken” (to see the sun sink into the sea) becomes “de son in de see sien sakke”.
A sample of both the soft and the hard g can be heard in the suddenly prescient and salacious 2010 carnival hit song by Jos van Oss (Oss being a place in Brabant) Ik heb een zachte G, maar ook een harde L (I have a soft G, but also a hard D), in which the male singer sports a Southern G and the female singers have a hard G.

For Dutch people looking for their soulmate, but who want to be sure that Rex the dog or Felix the cat will also be accepted, there’s the new dating site Dier en mens (roughly ‘Pets and people’). As of 24 February, Dutch folks can look for a date to that cat show or to go shopping for that new python. Founders Fred and Betty Mercey decided to start the site because many animal lovers often meet people that are not as crazy about animals as they are. According to them, Dier en mens is the only site in the Netherlands that caters to dating pet freaks.
