The biggest gathering of red heads in the world took place in Breda yesterday, netting the city on Noord-Brabant a fresh mention in the Guinness Book of Records.

Some 5,000 gingers from over 60 countries descended upon the city for its annual Red Head Day. To break the old record of most natural red heads gathered in a single enclosed space, Breda had to collect more than 892 of them. In the end 1,255 red haired people did the job. The old record was established in 2010.

Brabant’s cities seem to like these record attempts. In 2007 Tilburg set the world fire breathing record, and later that same Breda set the record for cola fountains.

In its Bright Spot series, tech mag Bright reviews Rotterdam barbershop Schorem (‘scum’) which caters exclusively to men.

If you want, you can get a haircut and a shave there (55 euro all included) with old fashioned tools such as straight razors, and you can apparently have a beer while you wait. Only for men, because “every man has the right to a place where he can be a man”.

Last year Noël Schoolderman created a series of short documentaries about ‘old crafts’, and the first episode was about Schorem:

One of the barbers says in the video: “A man should only be touched by three other men in his lifetime: his doctor, his tailor and his barber. […] These days you can see a proliferation of Albert Heijns, Blokkers, Xenoses, all the big retail chains. I think people these days have a need for something unique, something with that special touch.”

Yesterday I came across this pair of scissors doubling as a door handle at a barbershop in Abcoude.

This simple and elegant solution presents a win-win-win situation for everyone involved:

1. Potential customers will be able to tell what kind of business this is.

2. Customers can use the handle to open the door.

3. The owner can now also serve passing giants.

I forgot to note the name of the barbershop, but it is the one on the corner of the Stationstraat and the Burgemeester des Tombeweg.
