Longest running ice lolly: the Rocket

Filed under: Food & Drink by Branko Collin @ 8:34 am

12 April 1961: the Soviet Union launched the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin.

1962: Ola launched a new ice lolly, the Raket (Rocket), and it has never (crash) landed since, making it the longest running model. It’s a simple ice lolly, shaped like a rocket, each of the three stages a different(ish) flavour.

The UK factory will produce 35 million Rockets this year, according to an article in daily the Volkskrant (Dutch), presumably hoping each Dutchman will buy two on average. The writer repeats some of the folklore about its popularity that’s been woven around this frozen hit: that the quality is high, that it’s got three good flavours, and so on. I don’t believe in that. I think the main reasons the Rocket has always sold so well is because it barely has any competition, it’s cheap, and it’s sold almost everywhere.

I remember that when we were kids, during the summers my mother, my brothers and I would walk to my uncle’s home in the forest, almost 6 miles from our house. Half-way along our route two old guys had put a refrigerator in their front room from which they sold ice cream to passers-by, and of course we always went for the Rocket because it was right in our price range.

Bernice Notenboom reaches South Pole on skis

On 13 January, after 923 kilometres of skiing in 38 days, Bernice Notenboom has become the first Dutch woman to reach the South Pole on skis, having endured harsh conditions, including -45 degree winds. Reaching the South Pole on skis pulling a huge, heavy sled was no easy task. Bernice also had pneumonia apparently not entirely gone yet, which she thought was altitude sickness.

“Every day it was 2 hours and 10 minutes of skiing, then a break, then another 2 hours and 10 minutes of skiing, then a short lunch break and again 2 hours and 10 minutes of skiing and so on until the night. Then we set up tents, melted snow for water, filled thermoses, etc. Whew! Now its all over. No more mandatory kilometres a day.”

In March, we had the world record fire-breathing in Tilburg and one month later, we now have world record skippy ball hopping at Walibi World in Biddinghuizen, Flevoland. Exactly 2,518 children participated, which was enough for an entry into the new Guinness Book of World Records, beating the old record of 2,263. The event raised 70,000 euro, which will go to the St Jansdal hospital in Harderwijk.

The organisers of the Langedijker beddenrace (Langedijk Bed Race) want to boost participation by pushing their bed from the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the Frisian town of Noord-Scharwoude (Langedijk). On August 17, Michel Smit and Siem de Groot plan to cross that distance in time for the bed race back in Noord-Scharwoude on August 25. In the heyday of the Langedijker beddenrace, about 15 years ago, some 125 couples participated in the race, although nowadays it’s more like 65. Smit and de Groot plan to also make into the Guinness Book of Records with their tour.

Netherlands top distributors of animal porn

Filed under: General,Weird by Orangemaster @ 10:56 am

Apparently, The Netherlands is top dog when it comes to distributing animal pornography, as it is one of the few countries left where this type of pornography is not forbidden. Filming animal pornography mostly takes place in Central Europe and Brazil, as the legislation there is also non-existent.

“The top two companies are located in The Netherlands,” according to the Director of Topscore in Doetinchem, one of the two companies in question. The other one is Cybermedia in Nieuwegein. “Of the 10 new films we release every month, the three animal films sell the best”. Many foreigners come specially to Amsterdam to buy animal porn and most animal porn websites are hosted here. The Minister of Justice Hirsch Ballin is considering banning animal porn in The Netherlands.

Why is this news? There was a recent Dutch article about a man raping another person’s pony 45 times (!) who could not be prosecuted because there’s no law against having sex with animals. They were thinking of getting him from breaking and entering.

On Wednesday March 14, the world record for fire-breathing was broken in the Dutch city of Tilburg. Heuvel square in the city centre featured 115 people breathing fire simultaneously. The old record in the Guinness Book of Records had been around since 2003, a record set by 70 people from England. The 115 participants had previously taken a fire-breathing workshop and the money they had to pay for it was donated to the Warchild organisation. The Tilburg student association D’Artagnan organised the event.
