International students flatly turned down for housing

Filed under: General by Orangemaster @ 5:18 pm

According to RTVUtrecht, tons of advertisements for student housing (usually rooms in a house that has been subdivided for that purpose; they don’t live on campus), are flatly and illegally turning down internationals. It’s also not news that this group, maybe more than the Dutch, are also falling prey to dodgy landlords.

In this Dutch video, the chairman of a student rights association explains that international students should not be turned away, but quickly adds that he understands why this is done since it is so difficult for the Dutch to find housing, and that ‘there is a language barrier and many obstacles to be able to live with an international student’.

The thing is, major universities have been encouraging foreign students to enrol at their establishments to make money, but have no plans to deal with the strain that this causes on society, which in turn is then becomes the government’s problem. And since there’s a constant state of housing shortage that has existed at least in the big Dutch cities such as Utrecht for decades, it seems to be nobody’s responsibility, leading to this kind of self-protecting behaviour.

The chairman in the video blames the government and the universities and not the international students for the problem. A quick Internet search has students living on camping sites, caravans, hostels, refugee centers and even their cars for a bit until some of them get lucky, find a couch, or actually give up their studies. People are still willing to pay just more than regular people renting an entire flat to get a room because they don’t have many options.

This article is from last year, but paints a picture of what internationals go through here to try and find a room to live in.

And we wrote about students living in containers in Amsterdam a few years back.

Night-blooming cereus in Utrecht ready to bloom

Filed under: General,Nature by Orangemaster @ 1:55 pm

For the first time in eleven years, a night-blooming cereus at the Oude Hortus in Utrecht is ready to bloom, and when it does, it does so at night.

The flower that blooms from the plant can be up to 30 cm. The experts say that it is the tropical weather we’re having in the Netherlands that is encouraging the plant to come out after more than a decade.

Over the next few days, one flower should come out, but when, nobody knows for sure.

Looking back at Dutch cycling in 2017

Filed under: Bicycles by Orangemaster @ 3:29 pm

Here are some cycling stories for starters, then you can watch a proper main course of Dutch cycling ups and down through the Netherlands and beyond from Bicycle Dutch here below.

This fall saw the opening of the world’s first printed bike bridge, made by the Dutch. Next, we had the success story of Amsterdam Central Station’s shared space, also mentioned in the video below.

And there’s a great one shot video with no editing whatsoever on a Canon Powershot (before mobiles had cameras) of my co-blogger and me getting ready to ride through Amsterdam with Christmas lights on our bike 11 years ago!

Kids’ gym class in Utrecht is the coolest

Filed under: General,Health,Sports by Orangemaster @ 7:07 pm

Children in the Netherlands

A physical education teacher in Utrecht has made gym class cool again by using games to keep all the kids busy instead of activities like dodgeball where kids have to sit out when they are hit while stronger kids play, and it’s going viral.

It’s going viral because he films the kids classes and puts them online.

On the Facebook page De Spelles (the ‘play lesson’) as well as on the website despelles.nl, you can see Dutch kids play relay races, dominos, Twister, and a whole bunch of games that keeps them busy, involved and happy.

Teacher Matthijs Jansen has been teaching PE since 2011 and strongly believes all the kids should participate and get exercise. One of the girls says she think Mr Jansen is the best meester (male teacher) of the school, but then he’s the only one (the only male teacher), she says, laughing.

Utrecht, first Dutch Unesco City of Literature

Filed under: Dutch first,Literature by Orangemaster @ 10:18 am

book_stack

Yesterday, Utrecht was named Unesco City of Literature by the cultural branch of the United Nations in Paris, and has the honour of being the first ever Dutch city to receive this title.

Utrecht, along with many other cities around the world, is being praised for its impressive literature history, as well as its literature festivals, writers, bookshops, libraries, studies and publishers. As well, the wonderful title can be used until the end of time, which is great for city marketing.

As of 2019, the former post office on De Neude will also be the face of the new City of Literature, a ‘cathedral’, for books and a meeting place for all things literary. “The Netherlands is a small language area and it’s not easy to get international recognition for our authors”, explains Michaël Stoker, director of Utrecht’s Het Literatuurhuis (Literature House). Stocker says this title will break the ice, so that worldwide people will be able to see that the Dutch have good writers and poets.

American crayfish ‘invading’ Utrecht

Filed under: Animals by Orangemaster @ 8:11 pm

Screen-shot-2016-01-10-at-4.30.21-PM-495x251

In the Leidsche Rijn neighbourhood in the west of Utrecht, American crayfish are ‘invading’ people’s gardens and scaring people walking their dogs as they walk on land. We told you about these pesky Procambarus clarkii, aka Louisiana crayfish last year, creeping around The Green Heart part of the country.

The red beasts love the stagnant water found in the Leidsche Rijn neighbourhood and bury their eggs in the area.

The options for getting rid of them include eating them, but you will need a lot of them to make a meal. And then there’s folks who give them to family around the country once they’ve caught them, increasing the risk of spreading the crayfish around even more.

The Internet says you can also keep them as pets in a tank.

Live Dutch DJ performance by Kypski

Records

While the country goes on holidays, it’s super busy nuts at 24HQ and good news is hard to come by, but fear not, we’ve got you covered like sunscreen.

Here’s a neat live performance by Kypski of the band C-mon & Kypski from Utrecht that technically has four band members, two of which are DJs and one of which is Kypski.

Here’s the live turntable and controller performance of ‘Headcrack’, a song (a not a remix) from his 2016 album ‘Wreck Fader’.

Vertical forest to pop up in Utrecht

In Utrecht near Central Station, in the new district of the Jaarbeursboulevard, Milanese firm Stefano Boeri Architetti will erect the ‘Hawthrone Tower’, a Dutch vertical forest after having won an international competition.

“The 90-metre-tall tower will be covered by 10,000 plants of many different species, aimed at creating ‘an innovative experience of cohabitation between city and nature.’ The green façade will allow Hawthorne Tower to absorb more than 5.4 tons of CO2, scrubbing the air for healthier living conditions for both residents of the tower and the wider city.

Construction will start in 2019 and should be finished in 2022. As well, on the ground floor it will also house a ‘vertical forest hub’, a research centre for the implementation and education of urban forestation worldwide, open to the public.

Need peace and quiet? Buy a small Dutch island

Filed under: Nature by Orangemaster @ 11:57 am

dutch_flag.jpg

Today nature area Vinkeveense Plassen (Vinkenveen Lakes), Utrecht is auctioning off 44 small islands, more specifically land strips in peat grounds where you can moor boats, called ‘legakkers’ in Dutch. Anyone who buys them is obliged to make sure they are well kept and do not wash away.

These small islands have been around since the last century. Their upkeep is expensive and selling them off to individuals seemed to be the best solution. However, nature organisations are very much against the sale, fearing that people will build houses on them and destroy the nature. But then again buying an island and then doing nothing with it isn’t a very attractive proposal and telling people what to do with their property is indeed quite shortsighted.

I wonder if people will buy more than one.

Mass mating dance in Utrecht for Valentine’s Day

Filed under: Animals,Art by Orangemaster @ 1:26 pm

Contemporary British artist Marcus Coates from London is asking single men to go to Utrecht Central Station at 4 pm on 14 February, which is next to city hall, to perform a mating dance. On a Tuesday when everyone works and goes to school.

Coates is planning to organise a makeshift dating show with the men doing the mating dance of the Eurasian woodcock, which involves running a certain route around the Netherlands’ biggest train station.

In the mean time, single women will be waiting at city hall to pick out a man by calling out to them, just in time to correspond with the mating season of the Eurasian woodcock.

Let’s unpack this, shall we? The first thing that came to mind is also the first comment I read: it’s heterosexist. Yeah, it’s about the birds and all, but still. And who’s paying for this? Won’t it be really busy at rush hour? And is this being done in the Netherlands so Coates gets a free trip over? Too many questions and not many answers in sight.
