Amsterdam is as multiculti as it gets

Amsterdam is again in 2007 the most multicultural city in the world, according to the City of Amsterdam. As of 1 January 2007, 177 different nationalities were living in the city, making Amsterdam No. 1 in this respect. Runner up is Antwerp with 164 nationalities, while New York has 150.

In 2006 a new nationality was added to Amsterdam, as someone from Malawi went to live there. Most foreigners come from Morocco (64,588), Turkey (37,421), Great Britain (10,244), Germany (6,670) and Suriname (5,609).

Despite the constant hordes of people, Amsterdam only has 743,104 inhabitants, who are mostly Dutch, as 532,548 only have the Dutch nationality. As well, another 123,204 have two passports, including a Dutch one.

And what’s this picture? This is De Bijmermeer or ‘Bijlmer’, a suburb of Amsterdam, an architectural feat and the city’s symbol for where to put all the poor and usually non-white foreigners. I’ve lived there as a foreigner, so I know first hand, although I did see some poor, white, retired Dutch folk. It was also world news for the plane that crashed into one of the buildings. If you don’t know this story, grab a beverage and read it, it’s really something.

Yes, it was opened a month ago, but sometimes good news travels slowly. The Museum of Bags and Purses opened its doors on 9 June 2007 and features a collection ranging from the 16th century to the present. The museum’s collection is very diverse and consists of more than 3,500 bags, pouches, suitcases, purses and accessories. The museum is recognized as one of the eight most important fashion museums in the world, so they say.

Bike spotting

Filed under: Bicycles,Design,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:13 am

weirdbike

Spotted in Vondelpark, Amsterdam in view of everyone yesterday, this odd bicycle attracted a lot of attention. The fact someone was filming could indicate that it is a rare breed of bike even by Dutch standards. It looks like someone took apart a bike and put it back in a completely different way. If anyone knows more, please tell us about it!

UPDATE: Thanks to Lola Granola (Heeey Bloom County, cool), I see that the man in the photo is the inventor, Michael Killian from Dublin.

Naked picture time in Amsterdam

Tunick

So far, 4,000 people have signed up for a yet to be determined nude photo shoot by Spencer Tunick on Sunday, 3 June sometimes early in the morning in downtown Amsterdam. The world-famous American photographer is known for his group photos of naked people in public spaces. Tunick already had a shoot this year in a bulb field in Schermerhorn, North Holland, but now he says his Amsterdam dream will come true. I believe it is possible to still sign up.

Tunick is happy that so many people have signed up for his project in Amsterdam.

New, detour-worthy ice cream place in Amsterdam

Filed under: Food & Drink by Orangemaster @ 10:58 am
yscuypje1.jpg

A new little hole in the wall that serves ice cream has just opened on the Albert Cuyp Market in Amsterdam, called Yscuypje (‘little ice cream cup’ in old Dutch, with a reference to the Albert ‘Cuyp’ Market). The sherbets are full of fruit, the ice cream is actually made with chocolate and cream, and the pistachio ice cream is pistachio green and not chock full of E412 (aka guar gum) and tastes like pistachio. Their ice cream machine is a top-of-the-line 30-year-old Italian device that costs as much as a big German car. The flavours are very ‘Amsterdam’, developed by the owners themselves, and the prices are very reasonable. You can also buy litres of it for home enjoyment.

The Amsterdam Literary Festival (ALF) is an annual event, held each May, which aims to put the charming Dutch capital on the world literary map – especially in the lead-up to 2008 when Amsterdam is UNESCO World Book Capital. This year’s edition will run from 15-20 May 2007.

Past guests at ALF have included the BBC’s Kate Adie OBE, award-winning novelist Sarah Waters and one of the UK’s most exciting writers, David Mitchell.

This year’s programme features performances, poetry, lectures and rummages through books at local book markets. And there’s the closing event: World Cuisine Buffet on an old steamship!

Actor and director Steve Buscemi is in Amsterdam for the premiere of Interview, the American remake of the film by the late Theo van Gogh. Van Gogh dreamed that his films would one day be the subject of American remakes and now, a little over two and half years after his death, his dream has come true. In the Van Gogh film, Pierre Bokma and Katja Schuurman played the main characters, while in the American version, Sienna Miller and Buscemi himself do.

In June, world-famous DJ Tiësto will be opening his own restaurant on the Reguliersbreestraat in Amsterdam. DJ Tiësto (we’ll call him Thijs) loves cooking as well as spinning records. The restaurant will name the dishes according to his greatest hits, so you can order a ‘Flight 643’ and a ‘Traffic’. The chef is not yet known, but apparently he is very creative.

Naked antics in Amsterdam

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 1:16 pm
fireman

Last Tuesday night, two men climbed into a hoist vehicle and stripped. The neighbours got annoyed and called the police and fire brigade, who couldn’t get them down because the hoist vehicle’s controls didn’t work. The rescue services were called, a ladder was extended and the two men were brought down safely. The men were extremely ungrateful and aggressive towards the rescuers, who calmed them down with a faceful of pepper spray. Then one man jumped into the canal and the firemen got him out with a boat. Both were arrested for being drunk, stoned and disorderly.

Single mom with 10 kids terrorises neighbourhood

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 10:29 am
slotervaart12.jpg

Women in the former USSR used to get a medal for cranking out lots of kids and women in Qu&#233bec, Canada would finally be left alone by the priest after about 10 for fulfilling their Catholic duty. But in the neighbourhood of Slotervaart in the west of Amsterdam, one woman’s 10 kids have been wreaking havoc for 9 years and counting. The children enjoy breaking and entering, stealing, arson and defecating in entrance halls of other people’s flats. It’s so bad that three families have already moved away. About 10 different help organisations work with the family, but it’s not helping, even though the house was renovated, the mother was taught how to clean her house and make sandwiches for her children.

Mayor Job Cohen was even asked to intervene, but he can’t do much. He says that even if the family were to be moved, the problems would just move as well. The owner of the block of flats has run out of patience and wants the children to be placed in foster homes.
