One in five Dutch men would like to own a gun

Filed under: General by Branko Collin @ 9:35 am

Maybe that title should be: popular science magazine sees women as second-class citizens whose opinions need not be known. The magazine, called Kijk (Look), asked over 1,700 ‘respondents’ if they would like to own a gun if such a thing were legal in the Netherlands, and 16% of the men said yes.

Possible gun lovers lurk both in cities and in the country, and are both high income and low income earners, according to Kijk. Preferences do follow political divisions, though. Christian democrats could not care less about owning guns, only 6% of them would want to. Of the extreme right wingers of the PVV on the other hand 29% feel they need to be packing in order to feel safe.

(Photo: one of the few times that I ever wore a helmet. I had long flowing hair back when I was performing my military service, so I tried to avoid wearing my helmet. The gun, by the way, was a FN FAL, just shortly before they were replaced army-wide by Diemaco C7s.)

Spot the two main ingredients in these fruit drinks

Filed under: Weird by Branko Collin @ 12:17 pm

I don’t often have the time to prepare breakfast, so I tend to end up taking a bottle of Fruit2day to the workplace. The manufacturer, Swiss company Hero, promises that these drinks contain all the fruit you need in a day. (The drinks also contain a quarter of all the sugar you need in a day, but the producer doesn’t give that factoid as much prominence.)

Can you guess what the two main (fruit) ingredients of each drink are? Answers after the break. To get you started, the names of the drinks from left to right, when translated to English, are: “Strawberry Orange”, “Raspberry Grape”, and “Mango Peach”.

Slo-mo video of Paris-Roubaix bike race for Holland Sport TV

Filed under: Shows,Sports by Branko Collin @ 2:06 pm

A program like Holland Sport is something you’ll never see on commercial television channels, which is what makes it a pity the publicly funded programme will stop after 8 successful years. Holland Sport was a show that mixed interviews of athletes with silly game elements, in which members of the audience got to pit their skills against the show’s guests.

Although the interviews were not as deep as they could have been (the show was, after all, intended as light entertainment), they did provide an alternative view into the lives of top athletes.

As an example of the sort of things a programme like Holland Sports could afford to do, here is a video poem Rob Hodselmans made for the show last week, covering the cobblestone-filled Paris – Roubaix bicycle road race.

Between 2003 and 2008 the show was hosted by presenter Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and comedian Wilfried de Jong. When Van Nieuwkerk quit due to other obligations, De Jong carried on solo for a couple of years.

Dutch student loses appeal to write thesis in Dutch

Filed under: Science,Weird by Orangemaster @ 11:56 am

A student had to write her thesis based on applied scientific research done in a company or institution, in this case, a hospital. The hospital demanded that her thesis be written in Dutch. The exam commission who will judge her thesis at the Radboud Univesity in Nijmegen demanded that her thesis be written in English.

The student couldn’t fulfil the requirements of her studies and decided to appeal the decision to be able to write her thesis in Dutch, which sounds weird. Exceptions have been made in the past to the English only rule, but that was then and those days are over: it’s English or nothing, which still sounds weird.

Her mentor also supported her appeal. It’s all fine that English be encouraged for the Dutch to be internationally recognised, but sabotaging someone’s studies to uphold a principle seems ludicrous. The University then blamed companies and institutions for not allowing students to do their thesis in English, but that doesn’t help this student at all.

Can’t it just be translated? In any case, if anything shows how English has became more important than Dutch (not that that is a good thing), this is a scary example of how things can go too far.

Utrecht openly discriminates against non-Dutch in marathon

Filed under: Sports,Weird by Orangemaster @ 10:40 am

Utrecht marathon bans foreign runners door tvnportal

On Monday 25 April, the city of Utrecht will hold its annual marathon, and the organisers have decided that non-Dutch participants are less worthy of winning this race as they’re simply too good and win too much. Sounds like something an elementary school teacher would say to the smart children not to hurt the stupid kids’ feelings.

Organisers are trying to discourage Kenyans in particular from taking part, saying only invited runners can win ‘big money’ prizes. Only Dutch nationals have been invited to take part.

If this isn’t discrimination, I don’t know what is. No other Dutch marathon does this.

3D printed chair by Bram Geenen designed using the same methods as the Sagrada Familia

Filed under: Design by Branko Collin @ 10:14 am

Writes Bram Geenen:

Designed using the same methods […] Antoni Gaudi [used], who made models of hanging chains [which, when viewed] upside down, showed him the strongest shapes for his churches. […] The chain models […] combined with a software script are used to generate the structure of the ribs. This is necessary because of the complexity of the forces in a chair’s backrest.

This video shows you what this means:

The chair can be bought from its printer, Amsterdam-based Freedom of Creation, who have over ten years experience with 3D printing. The measly sum of 15,977 euro, making the chair not as cheap as a CatCase, will ensure this treasure becomes yours. Not a word on whether you get complimentary new car smell with that order.

Superbus gets shown to the press

Filed under: Automobiles by Branko Collin @ 2:36 pm

On April 4 former astronaut Wubbo Ockels showcased his Superbus to the press at a former air strip near Leiden.

For those of you who don’t remember, the Superbus is a bus shaped like a race car. Its top speed is 250 kph, to be reached in custom bus lanes. Its aerodynamic shape not only allows it to go fast, but apparently also makes it energy efficient. It can carry up to 23 passengers.

The Superbus prototype is on display at the 59th UITP Congress & Exhibition in Dubai starting today. A feasibility study has shown that the Superbus might be the most efficient public transport option between Amsterdam and Groningen, a distance of 180 kilometres that nevertheless takes two hours by car and even two and a half hours by train. The Dutch government, one of the major backers of the project, is said to have cooled considerably on the Superbus idea, and Ockels now hopes to be able to convince Arabian backers of the usefulness of a fast Abu Dhabi – Dubai connection.
