Thieves make off with church bells

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 7:01 am

While increasingly more copper is being stolen from train tracks, warehouses, lighting rods, construction containers and the likes, some thieves have moved up to bronze church bells.

In Apeldoorn, two 100 kg bronze bells were stolen from a church sometime on Tuesday 27 July. In nearby Twello, thieves scored 11 17 kg worth of bells.

Underaged boy re-enacts film with mom’s car

Filed under: Automobiles,Film,Gaming,Weird by Orangemaster @ 3:09 pm

First there was our world-famous story about a man causing a blackout in a hospital, thinking he was playing horror video game Silent Hill, now there’s a 17-year-old boy in Veenendaal who re-enacted the movie ‘The Fast and the Furious’ by driving his mom’s car into someone’s yard.

Legal driving age is 18 here, so he borrowed mom’s car illegally. Not only did the boy trash someone’s yard, he also drove the car home, parked it, and pretended nothing happened. He got caught by the cops because a licence plate fell off in said yard. Damn. His excuse to the police was that he had watched ‘The Fast and the Furious’ and wanted to try out drifting, a driving technique “where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels through turns,” and “make smoke come out of the tires”.

The Ice Man breaks his own ice sitting record

Filed under: Dutch first,Science,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:57 am

On Saturday in Utrecht’s busiest shopping mall, Wim Hof, aka the Ice Man, broke his record of sitting in ice for 1 hour and 13 minutes by a whopping 31 minutes 23 seconds (1 h 44 min 23 sec).

Back in May, after having put Hof through tests, two Dutch scientists in Nijmegen concluded that what he can do “is medically impossible”.

He’s just the definition of cool.

Read and watch more about The Ice Man being a freak of nature.

Willem Breuker (1944 – 2010): what the papers say

Filed under: Music by Branko Collin @ 8:42 am

Last week composer, band leader and saxophone player Willem Breuker died of lung cancer at the age of 65.

Breuker played a type of Dutch jazz that was dfferent from American jazz. In 1974 he founded an 11-piece band called the Willem Breuker Kollektief, with which he toured and played until the end.

Frankfurter Allgemeine writes about him:

Willem Breuker irritated everybody in a way that was humorous, never belittling and always clarifying.

He could entice the most trivial series of notes from his instrument, but he would tie those notes together in his unified concept of jazz, street songs, Mozart gestures and folklorisms in what was the high art of a public music theatre.

The way he worked with this material was anything but trivial. He pushed schlagers into the acid bath of Free Jazz, painted over twelve tone rows with Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western sound, and put Italian operas back into the street, from where they originally came. None of that came across as arrogant, and nobody was made fun of, even when the odd overtone sometimes sounded a bit different from what one might have gotten used to.

Le Monde adds:

In the Dictionary of Jazz as edited by Robert Laffont, music critic Daniel Soutif said of the Kollektief that it practised “with much humour a form of musical theatre in which the pastiche played a big role.”

Süddeutsche Zeitung:

Breuker was an exception in the otherwise humour free genre of Free Jazz. At a time when his contemporaries were busy trying to grasp the spiritual depths of exotic folk music and coming up with new theories of music, he staged his improvisations as actions of a musical fun guerilla. He would at times mock a major competitor by playing his compositions on a plastic flute, and he would test audiences’ patience with schlagers.

And NRC.next:

Breuker was contrary, stubborn and had an enormous drive.

Spider double-somersaults car across road

Filed under: Animals,Automobiles by Branko Collin @ 9:57 am

An eensie-weensie spider startled a 43-year-old woman from Oostvoorne so much last Monday that she drove her car onto the shoulder of the road, upon which the vehicle made a double somersault and landed on the other side of the road.

The woman and her children of seven and nine got out the car unharmed, Trouw reports. This took place on the Schrijversdijk (‘writer’s dike’) in Brielle, and the time was 9.45 a.m.

No one knows what happened to the spider.

Summer swim fashion: short, tight and lots of skin

Filed under: Fashion by Branko Collin @ 7:10 pm

The fashionistas of daily newspaper De Pers predict the return of Speedo-like swim wear.

Swim suits are already out of fashion for women the paper concluded while prowling the Bloemendaal beach where bikinis, especially the ones with triangular patch tops, were in an overwhelming majority.

The brightly coloured swim brief is already replacing the Bermuda for men, which only accounted for 65% of the sales.

A fairly recent fashion among both boys and girls is to wear underwear beneath swimming trunks, with the underwear brand name prominently exposed. In 2008 public pools started outlawing the combination, citing hygienic concerns. Underwear manufacturer Björn Borg told De Pers that it saw an increase in sales of microfibre shorts, which dry faster. The brand has also started to produce its own line of swimming trunks.

German and Dutch students don’t mix in Maastricht

Filed under: General by Orangemaster @ 10:49 am
Maastricht1

At Maastricht University in Maastricht, just a few kilometres away from both Belgium and Germany, Trouw claims the Germans keep to themselves and so do the Dutch. The main reason is that stereotypes prevail: the Dutch like to party a lot and are considered lazy, while the Germans actually want to be studying and are too serious. Those are excellent reasons not to hang out together, although not convient for collaborative school projects. The article says the Germans don’t ‘integrate’ and that’s a loaded word to use, they didn’t ‘immigrate’, they just ‘don’t mix’.

Even though there are foreign students in Enschede, Groningen and Nijmegen, half of them are German, which doesn’t give an international allure to any of the establishments. A student council representative explains that it’s easy to mix with international students (non-German), but much less with Germans. No explanation is given and that’s odd.

And then apparently the Dutch “are annoyed at the level of Dutch the Germans speak, as it is not good enough”. Isn’t that usually a given? That’s cold.

Non-German students in Maastricht came for an international atmosphere and have ended up in the middle of a Dutch-German group, forcing them to try and blend in with both. “Maastricht should not make promises it can’t keep: don’t call yourself international when all you have is Dutch and German students,” said one student to the newspaper.

Anyone from Maastricht, expats, students, Germans have anything to add? Don’t mention the war for no reason or make stolen bicycle jokes in the comments please.

Sports park lit up entirely with LED lighting

Filed under: Dutch first,Science,Sports,Sustainability by Orangemaster @ 11:26 am
LED

As of September, a sports park in Eindhoven (three football pitches, four tennis courts and the rest of the place) will be entirely lit using LED lights, made popular in its mordern-day version sometime around 1999 by Dutch firm Philips, headquartered in Eindhoven.

Local newspaper Eindhovens Dagblad claims that this is a world first, as they couldn’t find anyone else who did this. LED lighting is much less energy consuming that regular lighting, up to 60% according to measurements quoted in the newspaper.

Government leaves Afghani interpreters to their fate

Filed under: General by Orangemaster @ 11:53 am
Afghanistan

Here’s one example where the Dutch could copy the US in a positive way: arrange special visas for the 102 or so Afghani interpreters that served with the Dutch forces in Afghanistan.

The Dutch mission in Afghanistan will be over and done with as of 1 August, a decision that led to the cabinet falling here in the Netherlands. It also marks the end of the interpreters’ labour contract.

Now that these interpreters have to return to their families, they fear for their lives, as the Taliban could find them and retaliate (kill them and their families). The US has a special visa programme for 50 Afghani and Iraqi interpreters a year. It is called “Special Immigrant Afghanistan or Iraq National who worked with the U.S. Armed Forces as a translator”.

The Afghani had expected the Dutch to do the same, but nope. The Dutch Ministry of Defense says NATO should deal with the problem, not the Netherlands.

Nice Christian values indeed.
