Major Bosshardt Day on 8 June

Filed under: Dutch first,General by Orangemaster @ 3:39 pm

It’s not a day off, but the Dutch have a new holiday on the birthday of deceased Salvation Army Major Alida Margaretha Bosshardt on 8 June. On this day an award named after her will be given to people who have a made a difference in Dutch society, according to the association Nederland Positief (Positive Netherlands). Although she was known as a Major, her rank was Lieutenant-Colonel. She was known for many good deeds including helping Jewish children during the German occupation and her work with Amsterdam prostitutes. I met her once and she was very friendly. I am surprised she gets a holiday and so are my sources.

Crossing the Pacific, home for Christmas

Ocean rower and adventurer Ralph Tuijn will be back in the Netherlands today just before Christmas after nine months of rowing on the ocean. He rowed 16,000 km and kept going even after a cyclone.

Tuijn left Peru, South America in March 2007 to head to Brisbane, Australia. Never before has an ocean rower crossed the Pacific without any assistance. Because of the wind Tuijn did not reach Brisbane and did not fully succeed his expedition. Instead, he landed on the island of Fiji.

On Fiji, Tuijn rested with his wife and daughter when cyclone Daman whipped by the island. Tuijn will arrive as expected this afternoon at Schiphol Airport.

“Dead bus shelter” promotes funeral museum

Filed under: Art,Dutch first by Orangemaster @ 11:12 am

A “dead bus shelter” has been buried on Amsterdam’s Museumplein (Museum square) to draw attention to the new Dutch Funeral Museum, which “due to circumstances” opens today. Although there’s frost on the ground today, the advertising people had time to bury something yesterday without damaging the grass permanently (the main reason why events aren’t held there any more).

The sign reads “for now”.

Getting a kroket with your mobile phone

kroket1.jpg

The Rabobank together with junk food chain Febo are making it possible for people to buy food using a mobile phone. It is a beta test.

As of Monday, 17 December hungry Rabobank clients who meet certain conditions can dig in to some Febo junk food on the Leidsestraat in Amsterdam by paying with their mobile phone. Some three to four Febo restaurants will be equipped to deal with mobile phone payments soon.

There’s a few catches: only hungry Rabo Mobiel clients can use this wireless payment service. And they also need to have a phone that supports Near Field Communication (NFC), which are apparently not easy to come by. Of course, the Rabobank says it plans to do something about that.

And then I wonder about payment problems, extra fees and all that. If anyone can actually do this, please share your experience with us!

Hyves.net throws party for 30,000 people

Filed under: Dutch first,Online by Orangemaster @ 4:21 pm

Thenextweb.org writes:

Sure, discussions about the Web 2.0 bubble are here to stay. Sometimes however, a social network proves the critics wrong. For example, the Dutch equivalent of Facebook, Hyves.net, is welcoming its fifth million user today. Four million users are Dutch (well, not me – where did they get that?), which is huge considering that the Netherlands has a population of 16 million. That’s absolutely true.

To celebrate the occasion, Hyves is throwing a party in Amsterdam. The location has space for 800 ‘Hyvers’ to party with the crew.

And this is the amazing part: more than 30,000 members asked to be on the guest list! What an active network! If so many members want to party with each other in real life, Hyves must have some value.

Boy arrested for “stealing” virtual furniture

Filed under: Dutch first,Online by Branko Collin @ 1:00 am

The police in Amsterdam have arrested a 17-year-old boy at an undisclosed date for removing virtual furniture from other people’s accounts in the virtual community Habbo Hotel. According to the police of Amsterdam-Amstelland (Dutch) the suspect hails from Breda. Four more suspects, all 15 years old and from Gennep, have been questioned. The police are charging the five with computer trespass, theft, destruction of data and buying stolen properties, although the article sums up the case as one of fraud. This is the first time people have been arrested in the Netherlands for stealing virtual goods. The police received reports from five victims.

Habbo Hotel is a commercial online community for teens. Members can go to chatrooms and buy furniture, called “furni” according to Wikipedia. The furniture can then be placed in so-called guest rooms, or traded with other members.

Pink cab trend hits Tilburg

Filed under: Automobiles,Dutch first by Orangemaster @ 3:24 pm
pink-cab1.jpg

Women in and around the city of Tilburg, Noord-Brabant will soon be able to travel in special women’s taxis, it was announced today. The new company, which will operate on the same fare structure as regular cabs, has been founded by local businesswoman Tanja Schollen, who heads the cental station taxi company in Tilburg. The company employs only female drivers and caters exclusively to female clients. The taxi company, called the ‘Pink Lady Cab’, will initially operate with two cars, each of which will have pink roofs. They will work during the day and on weekend nights. “Female customers often indicate they feel safer with a female driver,” Schollen told reporters, “we also expect a lot of clients who for religious reasons prefer not to sit in a car with a strange man.” Female taxi companies have proven to be successful in several major cities in Europe and the Middle East, including London and Dubai.

So I guess after two years in London, trying it out in the Netherlands is a safe bet. Too bad no one has the brains or guts to do this in Amsterdam.

Here is more info over London’s Pink Ladies from 2005.

Big mouth to ashes

Filed under: Dutch first,General by Orangemaster @ 11:51 am
bushalte.jpg

You could just blame it on semantics, but you could also agree that by calling your product “indestructible” (Superman comes to mind), they were asking for it. A Dutch businesswoman once said that when the Dutch claim their product to be something, you have to multiply it by three to get its real value. This time, it applies much more to the after-the-fact, save-your-derriere comment.

The municipality of Binnenmaas was very proud of their new ‘vandal-proof’, bus shelters until a group of badazz firestarters burnt all of them down in Maasdam, South Holland. The manufacturer’s comment after the fact was “but anything can be destroyed”. Got Kryptonite?

Follow the link for a nicely framed picture of the ashes.

What’s that in your pocket?

Filed under: Dutch first,Gadgets,Music by Orangemaster @ 11:45 am

If we can believe the hype, the world’s first pocket-size DJ system, The Pacemaker (weird name) will be shown to the public for the first time at the Amsterdam Dance Event this weekend, with people walking around, showing you how it works. It’s the next step from the iPod DJ systems because it’s small and fits in your pocket. Being able to walk around with 180 GB of music is very cool indeed. Needless to say it’s not cheap, not yet available and let’s see what the real DJs have to say about it first.

UPDATE: Laurent Chambon, journalist and DJ at the event says, “Very cool thing, but a bit small. Risky for the DJ without the protection of a booth. I prefer using my Mac and Traktor.”
