Woody Allen’s first gig in the Netherlands

Filed under: Dutch first,Music by Orangemaster @ 9:00 am

For the very first time Woody Allen will be performing with his New Orleans Jazz Band on Sunday 21 December in the Heineken Music Hall, Amsterdam. He is a clarinetist – not everyone knows that, as I just had to explain to a Dutch person over coffee why I said “performing”. Woody Allen is also a huge jazz fan, something that’s pretty obvious if you’ve seen any of his films. The music always has a prominent place in his films, usually jazz from the 1920s to the 1940s.

In this video he’s playing in Budapest with the New Orleans Jazz Band. He has been playing clarinet since he was 15 and started performing in the 1960s with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the New Orleans Funeral and Ragtime Orchestra.

I remember a time in the 1980s when he was a regular at Michael’s Pub in New York City on Tuesdays, but never saw him because I was way too young to get in.

New Dutch rare groove compilation

Filed under: Music by Orangemaster @ 9:01 am
Dutch rare groove vol. 2

Back in 2005, initiated by the hip Bert and Arjo of Black Audio Market, a CD compilation project called Dutch Rare Groove (CD below, artwork by Bert) compiled by Dutch funk lover and DJ Sjeng Stokking showed the world that the Dutch did have the groove, it just had to be put on a CD.

And since Stokking had plenty of other obscure material waiting to be pressed, he decided to release Dutch Rare Groove volume 2, with 18 very rare, funky tracks, recorded in the Netherlands mostly during the 1970s. And just like volume 1, the extra tracks on the second CD count as well: 14 remixes by people such as Eboman, Perquisite, Git Hyper, Kraak&Smaak and DJ Maestro. Both State Of Monc and Monsieur Dubois reworked some oldies into unique, fresh tracks. Out in stores as of 24 October, Dutch Rare Groove volume 2 will also be presented live on 23 December at the Melkweg, in Amsterdam. Dutch rare grooves volume two includes tracks such as “It’s Time To Get Funky” by Billy Jones, “Street Rondo” by Thijs Van Leer, “Catch Fire” by Rob Franken Organization and “A Box For Leslie” by Jack Van Poll.

A car with huge speakers to annoy everyone

Filed under: Automobiles,Music,Weird by Orangemaster @ 3:11 pm

DJ car

Dutch artist Olaf Mooij built a car with the sound system on the outside. In fact, he is standing in front of two turntables on this photo. His DJ Mobile is designed to be used as a driveable PA system, which you park, and then operate from a DJ platform while standing up through the open sunroof. It was inspired by the Faithless song ‘God is a DJ’ and I think it’s cool.

The Silent Disco is a hit abroad

Filed under: Dutch first,Gadgets,Music,Shows by Orangemaster @ 10:24 am
Silent disco

The Silent Disco from the Netherlands is slowly making its way around the world. It started as an attraction at the Dutch travelling theatre show called ‘de Parade’ and now it’s going to be featured in London for the very first time. On 10 September they’ll be another first: Silent Disco at a live concert. The Fun Lovin’ Criminals are going to play for people wearing wireless headphones – no speakers. The first 650 tickets are being given away via Facebook.
Also performing will be Dirty Pretty Things, Mystery Jets and Supergrass.

I went to the Amsterdam Parade once and watched the Silent Disco as it was on an open dance floor outside. It’s strange to see people dance, but not hear any music. It was definitely one of the most interesting attractions I’d had seen.

Dutch journalist’s French music compilation gets sequel

Filed under: Music,Shows by Orangemaster @ 9:27 am
Filles Fragiles 2

After finally convincing a Dutch record label to release his hand-picked French girls music compilation Filles Fragiles which did better than anybody expected, Dutch music journalist Guuz Hoogaerts aka Guuzbourg is currently working on volume 2 which will be out in October. To support the launch this time there will be shows in November at the Sugar Factory in Amsterdam and the Schouwburg in Leiden with top French acts Françoiz Breut, Vanessa Contenay-Quinones of Vanessa & the O’s and Paris’ Peppermoon. Peppermoon, featured on FF1, performed on the Dutch television programme ‘De Wereld Draait Door’ hosted by Matthijs van Nieuwkerk who was so impressed that he has now written the introduction to the liner notes of FF2. Hosting the evening will be famous Dutch writer Ronald Giphart who wrote the intro to the liner notes the first time around and whose neologism ‘zuchtmeisje’ (sighing female singer) made it into the Dutch dictionary.

Big orange disclaimer: I have been doing projects with Guuzbourg for close to four years now, we DJ together on occasion (shamless plug for our next appearance) and yeah, it’s French and very original.

Jan Akkerman concert on laddermill power

Filed under: Aviation,Music,Science by Branko Collin @ 9:05 am

Dutch guitar giant Jan Akkerman, former astrounaut Wubbo Ockels and Delft University all worked together to come up with this tiny concert in the Stadspark of Groningen last year. The reason? The electrical power was delivered by a prototype of a so-called Laddermill, an invention by Wubbo Ockels that is currently being developed at the University of Delft, and that consists of a chain of kite-wings that act as kites when going up, and as wings when going down.

Laddermills should be able to deliver from kilowatts to megawatts of power, enough to provide neighbourhoods and cities with electricity. According to the Guardian, laddermills are especially useful in The Netherlands, Denmark, the UK and Ireland “thanks to the high-speed jet stream.”

If you’ve never heard of Akkerman before, check YouTube for “focus hocus pocus.”

World champion whistler Geert Chatrou does it again

Filed under: Music by Orangemaster @ 8:26 am

Last Monday competition whistler Geert Chatrou from Mierlo, Noord-Brabant, was crowned the world champion of whistling in Tokyo for the third time. He first held the title in 2004. Chatrou performs regularly and has his second CD out. Many whistlers make whistling their job while Chatrou prefers to work as an orderly.

Enjoy him whistling ‘Queen of the Night’ (with that wonderful high note) taken from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) opera.

There is such a thing as illegal downloading, says judge

Filed under: Film,Music,Online by Branko Collin @ 4:14 pm

In a case that at its surface did not seem to have much to do with the legality of downloading music and films, a three-headed court in The Hague has declared that downloading from an illegal source is itself illegal (Dutch). The court baffled observers (Dutch) by failing to specify why it would be illegal, other than referring to a three step European Union test that downloading apparently fails.

The Netherlands has an exemption to copyright that says that copies made for private use are not infringing, regardless of whether the author was paid or not. Originally this law applied at a time when ordinary people could not easily make exact copies, and when negotiating a contract with every author about every copy would have been too much of a burden on all concerned. With the advent of the personal computer and the internet as perfect copying and communication tools this law has come under fire, even though studies show that for instance the average musician suffers no ill consequences from downloading.

In order to pay authors for supposed losses they suffer from private copying, the law allows for authors’ organisations to collect levies from users, for instance by having users pay extra for blank media. These levies are then distributed to the authors. This law suit centered on levies: a rights organization was sued by makers of blank media over the way it calculated the height of levies. One of the questions put to the court was: is downloading a form of private copying? If it is not, then rights organisations have no legal right to raise levies for it. That though for some strange reason was not a conclusion the court was willing to draw. If a law becomes so out of touch with the times that even the professionals don’t know how to apply it anymore, what chances do mere mortals stand?

(The three step test is in Directive 2001/29/EC, paragraph 5: “The [private copying] exceptions and limitations […] shall only be applied in certain special cases which do not conflict with a normal exploitation of the work or other subject-matter and do not unreasonably prejudice the legitimate interests of the rightholder.”)
