Prayer party against porno on television

This one is for all of you out there who think that the Dutch are so very liberal and totally relaxed about sex, drugs and rock & roll.

A huge brouhaha has been created by a Dutch television station that will be broadcasting the 1972 porno film Deep Throat after 10 pm I might add on Feb 23. As if all those R&B videos with ‘hos’, those sex programmes with couples getting married naked in Jamaica and misleading webcam sites haven’t taken up enough space on television already.

Apparently, a bunch of religious fanatics (yes, we have those too) led by former evangelical television director Bert Dorenbos have decided to pray on Friday 8 February and Friday 15 February by the television broadcast tower to try and stop the broadcasting of the film.

1. Unless you take the tower out Jack Bauer style, you’re wasting your time. I hope it rains really hard.
2. Are you blind to all that other porn-like stuff on TV or just having Christian tunnel vision?
3. Don’t watch, no one is forcing you. You can always rent it if you change your mind.

Fined for not driving over a cat

A driver in Schiedam was fined EUR 75 for not driving over a cat, or basically, ignoring a green light. The man was trying to avoid running over the cat by waiting until it got out of the way.

“If I had hit the gas, I would have killed the cat and gotten a fine for ‘destruction of property’. So I waited and because I did, I got a fine for ignoring a green light.” The driver says he’s usually calm, but this got him pissed off. “I wrote to the the mayor and told her that her fining policy makes me sick and then I wrote to every member of parliament.”

Hypnotism made National IQ Test results worse

As a follow up to the story Hypnotised to participate in National IQ Test, here are the results. Surprise! They scored worse than expected. Dark forces at work or sleeping?

First, the candidates took the test yesterday afternoon normally and scored an average of 126. Last night the group took the test again under hypnosis and scored an average of 118.

Amusingly enough, they have nothing to be ashamed of as they had the best score. Dutch celebs had an average score of 114, followed by a group of women football players with a score of 113. The gifted kids group had the worse score, with 104.

I can explain why the kids did worse than expected. So many parents think their children are gifted when they’re not. Ordinary parents are surprised when their kids know more than they do, which happens quite often. It’s all very objective.

He brought a piece of his toe to the reunion

Tinus Udding kept a piece of his big toe that he lost way back in 1963 during the very harsh Elfstedentocht (Eleven-cities Tour speed skating competition in the province of Friesland when it’s cold enough) of 1963. Competition skater and all-round tough guy, Udding brought his left toe bit to the Elfstedentocht reunion held two days ago, commemorating the 45-year anniversary of the 1963 edition. The toe will get its own spot in the Schaatsmuseum (Skating museum) in Hindeloopen. The Elfstedentocht of that year took place in -18 degree weather with ice cold wind. Only 69 people made it to the finish out of the almost 568 competition skaters that took part. Tinus Udding was 31st, minus one toe.

Hypnotised to participate in National IQ Test

On 23 January, a group of hypnotised people will participate in the National IQ Test on telly. Before the broadcast, those to be put ‘under the spell’ will do an old test. After that they will be hypnotised by Rasti Rostelli who will tell them that they are very intelligent. Then they will go and and do the new test live in the studio. The hypnotised folks will have to compete against another group, which include real-estate agents and gifted children (interesting combination). A group of Dutch celebs will also participate in this year’s edition.

Police find man and woman testing erection pills

A man and woman were found naked testing 58 erection pills in a car, police in The Hague reported today. The police noticed a car with steamed up windows parked on the street on Tuesday night. Inside were the vehicle’s 53-year-old male owner and a 19-year-old female, both naked and engaging in sex.

The two claimed they were testing different erection pills as part of an experiment, in which the young woman said she was participating voluntarily and with no financial inducements.

Police however arrested the man after finding a second drug (marijuana) in the car.

Count the Dutch clichés in this news story!

Man refuses medal, not prestigious enough

A few days ago, the former mayor of the town of Scheemda, Groningen, Jan Leegwater was named a Member in the Order of Orange-Nassau (Orde van Oranje-Nassau in Dutch). However, he thought he deserved more and returned the medal. Leegwater feels he should at least have been knighted (second to last rank before Member, last rank) or even been named Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau (third best).

Push-up bras hinder probation work

Push-up bras are currently at the centre of a huge conflict for probation employees in the Den Bosch region and the Penitentiaire Inrichting (PI)(prison) in Grave, Noord-Brabant. Nobody can come into the prison as long as the detection ports peep. Metal objects that cause the peeping have to be removed. You all see where this is going – push-up bras make the detection ports go ‘peep peep’, which stops female probation employees from doing their work by going into the prison to prepare reports. They also refuse to take off their bras or change bras just to be able to do their work. Security refuses to let them in and so the women are pretty pissed off and aren’t getting work that needs to be done in the short term to the detriment of prisoners. The ports are not an issue anywhere else in the Netherlands. The worst case scenario is to send only men. Why isn’t anyone talking about getting them fixed? Seems pretty obvious what has to be done.

Dam disclaimer for New Year’s concert

I know they have surveillance cameras and some web cameras downtown Amsterdam, but walking down the street and seeing a disclaimer posted before arriving on Dam Square made me uneasy. No glass and no fireworks is understandible, but warning me about possibly being on TV, YouTube and the likes does not seem necessary. Will people actually think of sueing for being on TV without their permission? I can’t possibly imagine it has come to this in 2008. And I’ll leave the quality of the English translation alone since it’s clear enough.

Girafes currently listening to Top 2000 on the radio

Since Christmas evening, the girafes of the Amersfoort Zoo have been tuning in to the Top 2000 hits of the year on the radio. This is the zoo’s way of making sure they don’t freak out when then hear the bang of the fireworks on New Year’s Eve according to head caretaker, Marjo Hoedemaker.

Every day the volume is turned up a little louder. On New Year’s Eve the music will be so loud that the girafes will not notice the sound outside the zoo. The music will be switched off three hours after midnight. Other animals in the zoo apparently don’t react to the bid loud bang of fireworks.
