Dutch fund sells plasters for different skin tones

The Nederlands Albert Schweitzer Fund (NASF) that aims to support initiatives for Africans has produced adhesive plasters in different skin tones that are being sold in Dutch drugstores, an actual Dutch first.

Together with being told to use ‘the skin colour pencil’ that was always a peach-like beige, ‘nude’ panty hose and ‘nude’ bras, so many products are created with only Caucasian people in mind.

The first bunch of plasters made by the NASF will come in six skin tones and cost 3,99 euro per pack of 24. For every pack sold, one euro will be donated through NASF to an African cause. As the NASF says themselves, “everyone is equal, but not everyone is the same”.

And this not a world first. American company Tru-Colour Bandages has been selling plasters of many different skin tones for a while, although only available in The Netherlands through Amazon. Founder Toby Meisenheimer, a father of six children in Chicago thought the standard beige-like bandages looked ‘totally stupid’ on the head of one of his sons.

New beetle named after astronaut André Kuipers

Filed under: Science by Orangemaster @ 11:58 am

A new species of water beetle discovered during a trip to Borneo arranged by scientists at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and a Dutch firm, Taxon Expeditions, has been named after Dutch astronaut André Kuipers. On the same trip, another beetle was named after American actor Leo DiCaprio for his environmental activism.

When determining a new species of beetle, scientists need to dissect the male genitalia in order to distinguish one variety of water beetle from another. “An internal membranous sac in the male is covered with spines, though whether these aid stimulation during sex or have another role is unknown.”

Kuipers also has a planetoid named after him.

Cool but dry King’s Day 2018

Filed under: General by Orangemaster @ 5:56 pm

King’s Day was cool yet dry at least in Amsterdam, and the dry part was the key since it is about being outdoors, whether you’re drinking or bargain hunting, or going for both.

Since every year we bring you pictures of anyone and anything orange, this year we went for what else we could we take pictures of for a change.

Some people had private parties, like Josée en Kees did. Or it was a birthday party admidst the rest, nobody knows. The photo is amusing as ‘feest’ (‘party’, pronounced ‘faist’) rhymes with ‘Kees’ (‘Case’, a man’s name).

Kdag-2018-1

The food trucks and stalls were abundant this year, many of which were from neighbouring countries who got the memo a while back that The Netherlands is the place to be on King’s Day. I saw a lot of espresso, but Vietnamese spring roll stands stood out. Poffertjes, a Dutch classic, were also on offer.

Kdag-2018-2

The best part of the day is when people want to pack it up and stop selling their old stuff and just put it next to the bins for collection. Some parts of town use let people dump their stuff in containers and yes, dumpster diving is socially acceptable at that point. If you look at this picture and think ‘there’s a perfectly good children’s bike in the trash’, you’d be right. The main reason we spend King’s Day in well-to-do neighbourhoods is because they leave the best stuff behind.

Kdag-2018-3

Kudoz to the city of Amsterdam for providing quite a lot of free bathrooms women can use, as opposed to only urinals – it’s about damn time. However, in the posh part of town, ‘women and children’ could take ‘royal dumps’ sponsored by a good cause, although surely not for free. Feel free to wonder why men were excluded and then tell yourself you’re discussing bodily functions on King’s Day.

So many signs, still many bike removals

Filed under: Bicycles by Orangemaster @ 2:08 pm

Bike-signs-Leidseplein

Downtown Amsterdam near the Leidseplein, one of the main party areas, a total of 54 bright signs asking folks to remove their bikes before April 23 was not enough to make it happen, forcing the city to remove 115 bikes.

A few of my Facebook friends took pictures of the sheer amount of signs they saw while biking, cracking all the jokes. However, the city is legally obliged to put signs at pretty much every bike rack, which would explain why there are so many. We also know how annoying it is to have to deal with the bike depot folks who remove ‘wrongly parked bikes’ due to a lack of bike racks in the first place and bring them to a bike purgatory 10 kilometres away from the city centre.

Anonymous Dutch player wins big online

Filed under: General,Online by Orangemaster @ 12:51 pm

Recently, an anonymous online Dutch poker player calling themselves ‘Daenarys T’ (from the character Queen Daenarys Targaryen of the Game of Thrones television series) won 1.000.044 US dollars (about 817.930 euro) during the Sunday Million Anniversary Take 2 online poker tournament.

As a profile photo, the person used a picture of amateur Dutch poker player Tim ‘FysioTim’ Hendriks. Hendriks himself said he wasn’t playing, reacting calmly to someone using his Twitter profile picture to play the tournament. However, he was a bit shocked that people thought he had become a millionaire.

Here at 24HQ where poker is a thing, we’re still miffed by the 2016 decision that considers poker a game of chance, which means anyone who wants to organise poker games needs a permit, profiting the state monopoly of Holland Casino. If you believe it is a game of chance and have money, hit us up, we’ll fix that.

Urban planning farce can be explained

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 7:58 pm

While these uselessly small parking spaces popped up in The Hague a few years back, an interesting show of urban planning gone mad in Woerden, Utrecht actually has an explanation. You can stop reading to try and guess while looking at the image in the second link or read on.

First, the city of Woerden hooked up the hastily fitted lamp pole for now, but will replace it soon, after receiving new ones. They claim it’s easy to fix, but yes, it looks totally stupid for now.

Then, it needs to deal with the run-up that leads into the bushes because that looks pretty moronic as well. The owner of the house had asked for a run-up, but has not yet dealt with removing the bush.

And it’s all about coordination, says the city. At the end of June things should look a lot less stupid.

Tradeable loot boxes declared illegal in the Netherlands

Filed under: Gaming by Branko Collin @ 1:55 pm

toy-cars-branko-collinIn a study released last week, The Netherlands Gaming Authority (NGA) has concluded that some video games are breaking the law by offering so-called loot boxes.

Loot boxes are in-game purchases in which the buyer does not know what is in the box until after the purchase. A box can contain in-game items such as cosmetic changes to one’s avatar, as well as items that make playing easier.

The NGA uses two factors to decide the legality of loot boxes. If chance determines the contents of a loot box and if loot boxes can be traded outside the game environment, the loot box is in violation of Dutch gambling laws. The NGA is giving manufacturers the opportunity to improve their loot box systems. From 20 June 2018 onwards, the authority will start taking measures against non-compliant manufacturers.

According to NOS, four games from NGA’s study that contain transferable loot boxes are Fifa18, Dota2, PubG and Rocket League.

Earlier this month South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission fined four local video game companies for allegedly deceptive loot box promotions, The Korea Herald writes.

You can read the NGA’s report in English at its website (PDF).

Flying a hydrofoil boat is like riding a bike

Filed under: Bicycles,Sustainability,Technology by Branko Collin @ 12:10 am

solar-boat-delft-gbvm2

Controlling a single-track hydrofoil is like controlling a bicycle, two Masters student from Delft University claim in a paper published in Naval Engineers Journal last month.

“We used a mathematical model to validate whether a single-track hydrofoil using two foils, one behind the other in the water, would remain stable in the same way as we stay upright on a bike,” one of the students, Gijsbert van Marrewijk, told Delft University last week. The principle of staying upright on a bike is the one of steering into the fall.

Van Marrewijk and his co-author Johan Schonebaum were inspired by the hydrofoil boat of the Solar Boat team of their university, of which they were members. Hydrofoil boats have wings under the hull that lift the boat out of the water, reducing drag and, all other things being equal, increasing speed. Using a single-track hydrofoil reduces drag even further over the more conventional and more stable multi-track vehicle.

See the 2015 version of the Delft University Solar Boat team in action:

For some reason recent versions of the boat have returned to multi-track hydrofoils. The mathematical model developed by the two students should make it easier to test new designs in a computer simulation.

First Dutch Netflix Original in the works

Filed under: Dutch first by Orangemaster @ 2:29 pm

Although last year we announced the first Belgian-Dutch series to hit Netflix, called ‘Undercover’, now there’s a Dutch Netflix Original in the works, with no name as of yet. Since Belgian television is developing and will broadcast ‘Undercover’ first, it isn’t considered a Netflix Original, while the unnamed Dutch project will be.

Produced by Pieter Kuijpers and Sander van Meurs of the Pupkin company, the eight-part series of 30 minutes will feature the combination of two elements, namely coming of age and horror, set in Amsterdam. A group of students enjoying the vices of the Dutch capital discover a link to a demonic world from the Golden Age upon which this country has built its entire fortune. This Dutch outing will be penned by writers’ collective Winchester McFly (Bankier van het Verzet, Smeris), while the showrunner will be Michael Leendertse (Van God Los, Smeris).

3D-printed bridge for Amsterdam takes shape

Filed under: Architecture by Orangemaster @ 5:53 pm

mx3d-robot-printed-steel-bridge-completes-span-amsterdam_dezeen_2364_col_16-1704x2573

Back in 2015 we told you about Amsterdam getting a 3D-printed steel bridge, and apparently printing the structure is now finished. The 12-metre-long bridge will eventually cross a canal on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal in Amsterdam’s Red Light district and you bet we’ll check it out once it’s installed.

MX3D aims to have finished the printing, placing the deck and coating the bridge by October 2018 in time for Dutch Design Week. In the mean time, you could sneak a peak at their workshop in Amsterdam North at the NDSM wharf if you’re in the neighbourhood.
