Weeding out labour problems with bus drivers

Yesterday about 100 bus drivers, currently on strike and upsetting many people who are just trying to get to work on time, used their ‘spare time’ to weed out the garden of the rehabilitation centre Het Roessingh in Enschede, Twente. This was apparently the bus drivers’ way to show they can put their time to good use.

All decked out in national orange, the drivers showed up ‘for work on time’ at 8:30 am to get busy pulling weeds. The drivers have been on strike for more than a week (I thought it was more like a month…) for a better collective labour agreement. However, the negotiations are going South and threats of going to the judge are being made.

I’m just upset at not being able to take the comfy bus straight to the beach.

A driver from Enschede who killed a 16-year-old girl while driving under the influence of alcohol in Germany cannot be banned from driving in the Netherlands, the Dutch public prosecution department said on Thursday.

A spokesman confirmed this is the case even though the German authorities have confiscated the man’s licence. The man will only be fined for not having his licence with him if caught driving in Holland, said ANP news service.

Rebuilding Roombeek disaster area nets city of Enschede the Golden Pyramid

Filed under: Architecture by Branko Collin @ 3:24 am

The city of Enschede has won the Golden Pyramid award 2007 for “inspiring contractorship.” The jury revealed yesterday that the municipality and architect Pi de Bruijn won the award for the way they handled the rebuilding of Roombeek, the neighbourhood just outside the city centre that was largely destroyed when a fireworks factory exploded in 2000, killing 23 and wounding 950. An area of 63 hectares (155 acres) was destroyed, and a new neighbourhood was planned on top of the old road map. Interestingly, residents were very much involved in deciding how they would like the neighborhood to look like, compared to the prevailing Dutch mentality that even beauty must be regulated. De Bruijn could not completely give up the idea of regulation and stipulated that houses along Museum Lane should be designed by well-known architects.

The result looks surprisingly lived-in. A number of buildings that were still usable were kept to increase that effect. The subscribers of the Skyscraper City forums have been following the developments with their digital cameras since 2004, giving a good sense of a developing neighbourhood. Dutch broadcaster AVRO followed the jury of the Golden Pyramid award during their judging, and has produced a 25 minute program about the Roombeek project.

Sex operator work as woman to get off welfare

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:45 am

A man on welfare benefits in Enschede, Overijssel was given permission to work for 10 months as a sex operator – pretending to be a woman called Ellen – for EUR 7,60 an hour, twice as much as on welfare. Francis Cappelle, 38, was aparently good at faking a woman’s voice and got the job, regardless of the fact that he has to lie about his identity.

Capelle is tired of what he does and feels he is cheating men out of their money. The placement agency UniJobs that found him the job said it’s just a job. The welfare people say if he doesn’t like it, he can get a job doing something else.
