New Dutch cars ready to tear up the road

Filed under: Automobiles by Orangemaster @ 8:21 pm

First, there’s the Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS, a four-door convertible supercar, which is a car segment that not many cars fit into, according to all the car blogs. It’s being built by a Dutch start-up company, it’s not yet available, but it almost is, February they say, and you can watch the car zoom along the corniche with Monaco in the background.

For now Savage Rivale is continuing work on the Roadyacht GTS’ convertible roof system but order books for the car are already open, with three customers having placed firm orders thus far. One of these orders is for a special version, the track-only ‘GTR’. It will come with a stripped out body, more powerful drivetrain, and plenty of carbon fiber to keep weight down.

Next, there’s a car that is ready to roll from a Dutch company in the province of Flevoland that has been around for ages, the Donkervoort D8 GTO. Bright.nl had good reason to write about it, as one of their former interns, Jordi Wiersma, designed the car. The first 25 cars will cost way more than 100,000 euro and the first 12 or so have already been sold.”

Jos Verstappen’s temper allegedly flares up again

Filed under: Automobiles by Orangemaster @ 11:46 am

He was the darling of the F1 racing world here in the 1990s because he was Dutch and talented. He was also the best weapon I had to get my Dutch friends to glue themselves in front of the TV on a Sunday while I was watching Jacques Villeneuve pull his own variety of stunts.

The rumours had started back then as well, about Jos Verstappen’s temper. He was accused of harassing and assaulting his Belgian wife at the time, ex-kart driver Sophie Kumpen. In the end, the judge only chose to punish him for sending threatening text messages and violating an existing restraining order. Last time I checked, a restraining order does look a lot like a red flag. There was something about slashing the tyres of her car as well.

A 24-year-old woman from Roermond, Limburg has recently filed a report with the police of a 39-year-old man from nearby Maaseik who attacked her at a hotel after a party. Since the police wouldn’t say who it was, the press is assuming it is Jos Verstappen, although the racing driver told the press everything is fine with him and his girlfriend.

There’s also an incident when Verstappen and his father ‘assaulted’ a photographer (a man) who ended up with a fractured skull at a karting event. They both got five-year suspended sentences after reaching an out-of court settlement.

How red asphalt is laid for bicycle riders

Filed under: Automobiles,Bicycles by Branko Collin @ 9:14 am

Mark Wagenbuur published this video of road workers resurfacing Parklaan in Den Bosch back in May, but I felt it was still interesting enough to share with the one or two of you who don’t already religiously follow his work. He wrote an accompanying piece at the A View from the Cycle Path blog.

Note that alongside the regular black asphalt for cars, two strips of red asphalt are laid. These will become the bike lanes. Two workers are continuously measuring the width of the prospective bike lines. I am not sure, but I assume this is to make sure the bike lanes have a minimum width. Remarkable, as there is no legal requirement to do so.

I don’t know why they use red for bike lanes. According to a 2002 article called Fietsvoorzieningen brengen kleur op straat by Fietsberaad, the decision is mainly a political one. It highlights that politicians supposedly care. Fietsberaad said in 2002 that red asphalt is three times more expensive to make.

Note that the famous Dutch Tiger Stone automatic road paver can also do bike paths by simply putting in the right coloured bricks.

Nissan GT-R is not an amphibious car

Filed under: Automobiles by Branko Collin @ 7:27 pm

A couple of days ago visitors to the Assen race track (home to the Assen TT) noticed this Nissan GT-R supercar in a brook. According to Autogespot.nl the driver lost control of the car during a high speed turn, sped across the bike path, and ended up in the drink.

In June this year somebody drove a GT-R at its 310 kph top speed through Haarlem. If only idiots drive these machines, I suggest the police arrest the drivers as soon as they get behind the wheel.

Sixteen-year-old girl beats everybody in debut car race

Filed under: Automobiles,Sports by Branko Collin @ 3:54 pm

Two weeks ago grammar school student Beitske Visser netted the victory in the GT1 category during the Dutch Supercar Challenge at Assen, despite receiving a traditional 25 second penalty for novice drivers and a drive-through penalty for a fast pit-stop. Two Corvettes took second and third place.

A day later Visser, for whom this was the first race in a real car, had to give up due to technical problems. In both races the girl from Dronten drove an Attack Praga R4 GT1, a Czech brand.

Visser had already built a name for herself in international kart racing, and hopes to one day progress to Formula One.

Sixteen is also the age at which American Danica Patrick, arguably the most famous female race car driver at the moment, switched from karts to Formula Ford (a British category).

World’s first hydrogen-based formula race car

The Forze IV, the first formula race car in the world that runs on hydrogen fuel cells was unveiled on 9 July by Delft University of Technology in The Hague for everyone to see.

The Forze IV is lightweight with two electric motors powered by hydrogen fuel cells and can do 0 to 100 km in 5 seconds. The one downside for the people who watched the unveiling is that the motor doesn’t go vroooooom.

Today the Forze team will be at the UK’s Silverstone race track for the Formula Student Championship where young engineers from around the world compete with their sustainable and innovative creations. On 16 August the Forze IV will attempt to break the world’s speed record for hydrogen fuel cell powered car on the Prinses Beatrixlaan in Delft.

Two insects die on license plate every 10 kilometres

Filed under: Automobiles,Nature,Weird by Branko Collin @ 11:02 am

An ongoing study by the University of Wageningen has registered 17,000 insects splattered on license plates so far. The researchers made use of 250 volunteer car drivers who counted the number of dead bugs on their plates during 385 trips, De Pers reports today.

Drivers sent in their reports through the website splashteller.nl. Trips that started or ended in the provinces of Groningen, Friesland and Zeeland yielded the most dead insects, whereas Gelderland turned out to have the smallest number of dead bugs.

In total 133 billion insects die on cars every month, though not just on license plates. Train locomotives are pretty much covered in them.

Dutch ‘Worst Driver’ contestant crashes into TV host

Filed under: Automobiles by Branko Collin @ 2:19 pm

A contestant of a TV show called ‘De Slechtste Chauffeur van Nederland’ (The Worst Driver of the Netherlands) has proven his inability to drive a car by hitting the programme’s host Ruben Nicolai and an unnamed cameraman with his car.

The show was broadcast last Tuesday. The segment shown in the clip was recorded on 12 April 2011 at Twente Airport. A hospital intern leaked the news of Nicolai’s ‘accident’ via Twitter, and was suspended for a short time, Tubantia reports. Nicolai and his colleague sustained only minor injuries.

The contestant who showed the most progress won a car, but the guy who hit Nicolai got his license cut in half by the host.

The show’s final was partially recorded in Paris, where contestants had to kill or maim as few French people as possible on the public road to win it.

Amsterdam parking rates slashed

Filed under: Automobiles by Branko Collin @ 12:29 pm

Amsterdam is the most expensive city in the world to park in. The city’s policy of driving car owners away from the centre by making their stay too expensive seems to be so successful that now an operator of private car parks has started slashing its rates.

In a bid to lure customers away from the competition P1 Parking has lowered its daily rate from 55 euro to 20 euro. The only snag is that you have to make reservations at least two in days in advance.

Competitor Q-Park and others are studying their options. Bloodthirsty financial news site Z24 is already announcing a price war.

Man gets driving ban in Germany for having a confusing address

Filed under: Automobiles by Branko Collin @ 3:42 pm
permit1.jpg

During a routine check in Germany a man from Nijmegen had his driver’s license revoked and received a driving ban as he still had an outstanding ticket for going 40 kilometres over the speed limit in 2009.

Ronnie Gashi argued that he never received the ticket. The police ignored this popular excuse, but the Dutchman managed to have his driver’s license returned on the spot when he pointed out that the police officer was writing down his address incorrectly, and that this could conceivably also be what had happened the last time. The Nijmegen neighbourhoods of Dukenburg and nearby Lindenholt are numbered instead of named—rare for the Netherlands, and apparently also for Germany.

The Gelderlander reports that the police contacted a public prosecutor who advised clemency.

For some reason, the driving ban was upheld, the paper does not tell why. Gashi is still fighting the month long suspension. I am also not sure why “Lankforst 5336” instead of “Lankforst 53-36” would confuse the mail, in fact that is how I wrote my address when I lived there.
