Shortbread cookies as cancer patients taste them

Imagine eating good old fashioned shortbread biscuits, but with an extra ingredient, spilanthol to give you the impression of how it is to taste biscuits the way a cancer patient tastes them.

The Internet tells us that spilanthol is a plant whose medicinal uses includes treating tooth pain and infections of the throat and gums. In other words, when you eat these cookies, they are tasty, but the spilanthol slowly takes over and makes the whole inside of your mouth tingle in an unpleasant fashion. And drinking water doesn’t help, which makes the whole experience ‘disgusting’, according to the Dutch who tried the biscuits.

That is the taste sensation of the ‘Awareness Through Experience’ (ATE) biscuit, developed by Robert Greene, chairman of the Hunger and Thirst foundation. The biscuits were made by chef Christian Boomker.

Before Greene himself was diagnosed with colon cancer, he was a nurse in an oncology department. Knowing that half of patients are underfed due to the terrible taste they experience when eating, he wanted to find a way to share this impression with others and draw attention to the issue.

Dutch PM cleans up a spill and it’s news

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte spilled his coffee at work and cleaned it up all by himself (see video). It’s news in part because a chorus of non-Caucasian women cleaners jumped up and down when he didn’t just leave it for them.

It’s normal to clean up your own mess in many Western countries, there’s no reason to think Rutte would think he’s above five minutes of manual labour. Would this film have been different if Rutte were a woman or if Alexander Pechtold (D66 party, holding Rutte’s papers) would have spilled his coffee as just a member of Parliament? Would the cleaners be jumping up and down, do you think? Would this have been of any interest without the cleaners in the film?

To be honest, I think we’re posting this because otherwise there’s not much positive to say about the Dutch PM at the moment. We will gladly tell you that the VVD is the most corrupt political party for the sixth year in a row.

Student runs top sushi restaurant from dorm room

Thai student Kitsanin Thanyakulsajja lives in a dorm room in Amsterdam where he has been running underground sushi restaurant Ephemeral for about three years. Thanyakulsajja will be stopping soon to start writing his thesis because that’s why he came to Amsterdam in the first place: to study.

With no restaurant experience and instead of ‘peeling potatoes’ at some Dutch eatery for low wages, he decided to open up an omakase joint, offering a very fancy 15-course Japanese meal, prepared and served by him in his dorm room, complete with a Tokyo-style counter and traditional Japanese tableware.

According to Munchies, within the last year, Ephemeral has been visited by some of Amsterdam’s most popular food critics, all of whom gave rave reviews. Local Michelin-starred chefs have also eaten here, many of whom expressed an interest in working with with the young student-stroke-chef in the future, if ever his studies bring him on a different path. Thanyakulsajja already has plans to collaborate with other restaurants and introduce Project Omakase to the wider Amsterdam food scene.

Then there’s the elephant in the dorm room: it’s probably illegal, but apparently nobody has a problem with this because everyone is raving about it.

All Chinese Indonesian restaurants in one book

Last summer, friend of 24 oranges HQ, journalist turned photographer Mark van Wonderen (pictured below) decided to write a book about Chinese Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands, and visited all 1097 of them. The book is entitled ‘Chin. Ind. Spec. Rest., a disappearing Dutch phenomenon’. Chinese Indonesian restaurants are big family restaurants the Dutch would go to on special occasions, as well as being classic take away places, complete with separate entrances and waiting rooms.

The ethnic Chinese born in the Dutch East Indies eventually came to the Netherlands as of the 1960s, and as a result opened a ton of restaurants, which are different than the usual Hunan and Szechuan Chinese fare you’ll find in other Western countries. The book captures the fading kitsch factor of these culinary institutions. The book launch was held at Wong Koen in Amsterdam Oost.

In front of Mark enjoying his book singing, there are a bunch of newspaper-like papers with prints of the inside of the book, which were used to wrap up the books people bought and had signed, the same type of paper used to wrap up Chinese Indonesian take away food.

Cider from discarded apples in Groningen

A group of four middle school friends who call themselves the Doggerland team is launching their first cider made from leftover apples from gardens and orchards in the Groningen area. At the end of last year, people could donate their leftover apples for the cider and it’s now time to taste the results. In April, two ciders were launched: Gembergloed (with ginger) and Honinghout (with honey).

Doggerland explains that people with apple trees sometimes experience the harvest as a problem: they make apple pie and some compote, and then they are stuck with hundreds of kilos of apples that fall on the grass, get jammed in the lawn mower or attract wasps. “We wanted to do something about the unwanted apples and decided to make cider”, explains Marleen, one of the founders of Doggerland.

If you live in the Groningen area and donate a minimum of 10 kilos of apples to them, Doggerland will hook you up with some cider in return. There’s even a Facebook group for this very transaction. The cider is being made in the Biotoop, a former biomedical centre of the University of Groningen in the town of Haren, aptly being brewed in the old chemisty laboratory.

Heineken pulls controversial advert in the US

Heineken, and the oblivious people that green lit this script, have produced a “terribly racist” advert that has been pulled after America’s Chance The Rapper called them out on it, on social media.

With the tagline ‘lighter is better’, referring to a range of light beers, a light skinned barman sees a similarly light skinned woman and slides a beer down the bar past two black patrons and one black musician. The beer slides for a long time being light and all, but the unfortunate message is loud and clear.

Chance The Rapper said it seems like companies pull stunts like this to purposely bait people to write about them, and that in this case, he had to say something. Heineken had since apologised, saying they “missed the mark”.

Monks reach agreement with rogue supermarket

A while back, Dutch supermarket chain Jan Linders was selling Belgian Trappist Westvleteren beer known for being hard to get your hands on, as it is sold in limited quantities. I’ve had it once and I can understand why people chase this beer down.

Jan Linders claimed that it had permission to sell 300 crates of the exclusive beer without any further explanation, while the Saint Sixtus Abbey that brews the beer was shocked since people cannot buy more than two crates at a time at the Abbey itself, and must wait two months for subsequent orders.

Luckily for Jan Linders, they won’t get sued by the Abbey, and Jan Linders promised never again to sell their Westvleteren Trappist beer. The Dutch supermarket chain also drew attention to themselves for selling the beer at 9,95 euro a bottle, normally sold at 1,66 euro a bottle.

Amsterdam boasts world’s first plastic-free supermarket

A few days ago, a branch of organic food supermarket chain Ekoplaza in Amsterdam West not far from 24oranges HQ, opened a plastic-free pop-up supermarket, selling close to 700 plastic-free products. Although the initiative comes from international action group A Plastic Planet from London, Amsterdam’s Plastic Soup Foundation was able to convince the Londoners to launch the world premiere in the Dutch capital.

The packaging resembles the look, feel and strength of real plastic, but is made using natural, 100% biodegradable materials. Ekoplaza has 74 supermarkets throughout the Netherlands and hopes to rollout this concept to other branches by the end of 2018.

“Dutch designers Eric Klarenbeek and Maartje Dros developed a bioplastic made from algae, which they believe could completely replace synthetic plastics over time, while Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Shahar Livne created a clay-like material using discarded plastic.”

And if they can do, so can everybody else at some point, starting with the insane amount of uselessly, individually wrapped vegetables at regular supermarkets.

Supermarket opening stops tram dead in its tracks

This week, a Jumbo supermarket in Zoetermeer, South Holland had a grand opening at which a bunch of yellow streamers were fired off into the air. So far, so boring.

Then, the wind caught the streamers and they flew all the way up to the tram’s overhead line and that messed up people’s commute. Someone called the local non-police neighbourhood uniformed agents to organise a clean up.

Jumbo supermarkets come into the news in weird ways. They had the pink shopping basket for singles, let students bring back a huge lorry full of beer bottles and let customers test different kinds of toilet paper in their bathroom.

Dutch baker wins World Master Baker award

Peter Bienefelt, owner of the bakery Atelier du Pain in Barendrecht, recently won the World Master Baker award at the Bakery Masters tournament in Paris, the highest possible award in the world of baking.

Not unlike a top athlete, Bienefelt even hired a coach, Hans Som, who said that Bienefelt is different than other bakers, something that could have gone either way. Baking for eight hours straight is also not unlike training like an athlete, according to them both.

Bread that Bienefelt planned to present needed to have characteristics such as crunchy crust and good flavour. He also went for the ‘wow factor’ by baking bread using pure water from the Eastern Scheldt estuary, sea algae, squid ink, currants and olives, as well as little salt, which is quite trendy these days, he adds.
