VIP service for Peter Gabriel on Dutch motorway

Peter Gabriel

Last Saturday, pop star Peter Gabriel’s red double decker tour bus got stuck on the A27 near Lexmond when the motor of the vehicle burst into flames. Peter and friends were en route to a concert in Belgium. The flames went out by themselves and the double decker was towed away. The regional transport company scored them a bus to help them get back on track.

I just happened to see his concert in Amsterdam (last minute invite from a friend, thanks again!) and took a few mobile phone pictures.

Dutchman Hans van den Hoek, better know as Daisy Dynamite, died yesterday at the age of 78 in Amsterdam. The transvestite and artist had a hit in 1973 with ‘Botch a me’. Van den Hoek started working in Paris in 1948 as a dancer. He first started out doing something akin to black face, but then went white again. Besides performing in cabarets and revues in several countries, Van den Hoek appeared in a few TV series and films, including Casanova by Frederico Fellini, together with Donald Sutherland.

Dutch national anthem’s 75th birthday

Filed under: General,History,Music by Branko Collin @ 11:25 pm

dutch_flag.jpgMay 10 was the 75th birthday of “The William” (het Wilhelmus in Dutch) as the Dutch national anthem. Queen Wilhelmina ordained on May 10, 1932 that from that day on, the more popular song should replace the slightly xenophobic “Wien Neerlands Bloed” (“If Dutch blood flows through your veins / Free from foreign stains”), which had served as the first national anthem since 1815. Ironically, the latter song was expressly created to counter The William, which was considered a pro-protestant song, and therefore offensive to Roman Catholics.

That Queen Wilhelmina would pick a song with almost the same name as hers is no coincidence; she is a direct descendant of the William in the song. The William is the oldest national anthem in existence, as it was written in the 16th century. The lyrics of the Japanese national anthem are much older, but as a song it has ‘only’ existed since the 19th century.

Wikipedia has a very good article about The William.

In June, world-famous DJ Tiësto will be opening his own restaurant on the Reguliersbreestraat in Amsterdam. DJ Tiësto (we’ll call him Thijs) loves cooking as well as spinning records. The restaurant will name the dishes according to his greatest hits, so you can order a ‘Flight 643’ and a ‘Traffic’. The chef is not yet known, but apparently he is very creative.

Dutch 70s hit music show revived on the web

The biggest pop music TV show in the Netherlands during the 1970s and the early 1980s was TopPop. This was the time when artists still had to show up in shows all over the world to have their faces remembered. Then video clips came along, and a competing channel brought Adam Curry back to the country to ride their wave. His show Countdown was the end of TopPop.

TopPop had several things going for it, not in the least its host Ad Visser, a slightly goofy looking guy who was into tantric sex and writing space operas. Artists would lip-sync against psychedelic backdrops, and if they were unable to come on the program, the show ballet of Penny de Jager would dance to a pop song. There was something oddly discomfitting about the show that was at the same time its biggest asset.

Clips of the show can of course be found on Youtube, but a few weeks ago an official archive was launched, which publishes themed compilations of performances. Think Blondie, Duran Duran, Randy Crawford, The Jacksons, The Carpenters, Grace Jones, Nina Hagen, and TopPop’s ballet dancing to the theme of Star Wars.

3FM DJ Michiel Veenstra is planning to broadcast from atop the North Pole for five days starting April 23. For the occasion, 3FM has been rebaptized Noordpool FM. The idea is to raise awareness for the greenhouse effect and figure out how The Netherlands can help find a solution to the climate problem. The last broadcast on April 27 will be at the actual pole, the northernmost point of the earth. This is the first time anyone has attempted to do a live radio broadcast from this location.

DJ Tiësto plays in airport luggage hall

On Friday 16 March, DJ Tiësto will be spinning tunes in the new luggage hall at Schiphol airport. The DJ from Breda has already sold 2,400 tickets to fans who did not even know where the gig was to be held. Although the hall has not yet officially been opened, the ‘concert’ will last four hours, marking the beginning of the ‘Elements of Life’ world tour. Tiësto will also ‘perform’ in the Gelredome in Arnhem, the date of which will be announced on Friday.

(The quotes are a veiled reference to the Dutch tax folks who consider some DJs as ‘performing artists’ who can deduct costs, but other DJs as just some ‘people spinning records’.)

Jumpstyle dancing: an heir to Gabber

Filed under: Music by Branko Collin @ 8:30 am

I just stumbled upon this techno sub-genre called jumpstyle, or jumpen (Dutch for jumping), a name that describes the style well. At times it appears to be a mix between gabber and folk dancing. Loads of kids are uploading videos of their moves to Youtube, so that you have plenty to sample. According to Wikipedia, jumpstyle started in Belgium and is now slowly spreading to the South of the Netherlands.

Below is a tutorial for the style. Warning: being a type of hard techno, the sounds emanating from your computer may not be considered workplace friendly. The actual tutorial starts 27 seconds into the clip.
