Beer ice cream is fine for kids

How could you serve beer ice cream only to adults? Children should also be able to enjoy beer ice cream, according to master chef Leon Ribbens responding to the introduction of beer ice cream by top ice cream parlour Clevers in Arcen, Limburg, better known as ‘beer country’.

The Hertog Jan brewery together with Clevers brought a beer ice cream out on the market, specially for summer, called ‘IJs met Karakter’ (ice cream with Karakter beer). Co-creator Theo Clevers said that because it had beer, he will only serve it to adults.

Beer ice cream is also made by other companies and surely kids eat it as well. And what about bonbons with liquour and wine sauce on meat? And then there’s all the sugar in the ice cream killing the beer…

Dutch films arrive 34 years later

Filed under: Film,Weird by Orangemaster @ 2:15 pm

After 34 years, educational films about the Netherlands arrived at the Holland museum in the town of Holland, Michigan. The first box contained the English language educational films “Jan: Boy of the Netherlands”, “Rotterdam Europort: gateway to Europe” and “The Netherlands: blueprint of an urban society”. The second box contained the Dutch films “Zeilen en Holland: terra fertilis”. According to the manager of the local post office, someone found the boxes and finally decided to post them.

The boxes were sent to Michigan in 1973 by the University of Wisconsin and the University of Texas. Both universities had borrowed the films from the Netherlands Information Service (now the Holland museum), which existed from 1936 to 1974 in the town of Holland, founded by Dutch immigrants.

Bike spotting

Filed under: Bicycles,Design,Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:13 am

weirdbike

Spotted in Vondelpark, Amsterdam in view of everyone yesterday, this odd bicycle attracted a lot of attention. The fact someone was filming could indicate that it is a rare breed of bike even by Dutch standards. It looks like someone took apart a bike and put it back in a completely different way. If anyone knows more, please tell us about it!

UPDATE: Thanks to Lola Granola (Heeey Bloom County, cool), I see that the man in the photo is the inventor, Michael Killian from Dublin.

Foiled toothpaste robbery

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:28 am
toothpaste11.jpg

Last Wednesday two thieves in The Hague made off with trays of toothpaste from a supermarket. One of them, an illegal Portugese (?) of 22, was arrested, while his friend managed to run way faster. The total value of the booty was 500 euro, according to the police.

A female employee saw the men around 3pm empty a tray of toothpaste into a bag and walk out of the store. The woman warned her colleagues when one of the thieves came back in. The man that was arrested confessed.

1) Illegal Portuguese? Aren’t we in the European Union??
2) Lame robbery – that’s why some toothpaste is cheaper on the outdoor markets
3) Can I make white teeth jokes?

More monkey business in Rotterdam

Filed under: Animals,Weird by Orangemaster @ 10:04 am
aapje

A passer-by in the Arent van ‘s Gravensandestraat in Rotterdam had to first rub his eyes before he could believe what he was seeing swinging in a tree: a small ape was hiding in one of the branches.

The police do not know where the ape comes from or what type it is (hey, it’s not a gorilla!). They’ve had to dispatch an ‘ape specialist’.

Although it’s cute, it feels like someone let him out of his cage by mistake.

Girls, lose your fear of tunnels!

Filed under: Automobiles,Weird by Orangemaster @ 3:49 pm
tunnel

Women who are afraid of driving through tunnels (!?) can practice doing so on Saturday, 9 June in the 6,6 km long Westerscheldetunnel, the longest car tunnel in the Netherlands. The management is holding a women’s day so that they can get used to driving under water. Some 400 women have already signed up. The tunnel people swear it’s a female problem.

The women will drive through the tunnel in a bus (?) and learn about safety in case they ever breakdown. And to make sure it’s a women’s day, massages and manicures will be given as well.

Mobile junkfood as art in Almere

Filed under: Food & Drink,Weird by Orangemaster @ 5:22 pm
kroketten1jpg.jpg

Artist Tilmann Meyer-Faje of Almere, Flevoland has started a ‘kroket’ art project and has been riding through the Stedenwijk Noord neighbourhood in a mobile kroket car he made himself. Once the artist found out that krokets had a rich past, he started collecting kroket recipes from neighbourhood residents. Besides collecting recipes and selling krokets, Tilmann also collected kroket stories. The kroket project will end on 7 July.

Some people keep arguing that krokets are not as junky as they used to be, but that does not mean they are healthy. And if anyone wants to catch the kroket car and taste sutff, here is the schedule.

Students invent powdered alcohol

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 6:12 pm

Five students from an institution in Boxtel, Noord-Brabant have developed a powder that by adding water turns into an alcoholic drink. The powder has been baptised Booz 2 go and contains 3% alcohol. And of course, the students did their marketing research and found out that students like the I-can-take-it-with-me-anywhere idea. Once it hits the market, the powder will cost a little more than 1,50 euro. It seems to have all the trappings of a hype.

Sex operator work as woman to get off welfare

Filed under: Weird by Orangemaster @ 9:45 am
phone1.jpg

A man on welfare benefits in Enschede, Overijssel was given permission to work for 10 months as a sex operator – pretending to be a woman called Ellen – for EUR 7,60 an hour, twice as much as on welfare. Francis Cappelle, 38, was aparently good at faking a woman’s voice and got the job, regardless of the fact that he has to lie about his identity.

Capelle is tired of what he does and feels he is cheating men out of their money. The placement agency UniJobs that found him the job said it’s just a job. The welfare people say if he doesn’t like it, he can get a job doing something else.

Hazardous daily bread

Razors in apples for Halloween? Well, we don’t do Halloween here, so nope. Cyanide in over-the-counter pain killers? No, that is passé. How’s about a bullet in your daily bread?

Last weekend, a 60-year-old man found a 9mm bullet in a loaf of bread bought in a supermarket in The Hague. The mystery of the wayward bullet has not been unravelled. The police are investigating and stuff.

CSI, anyone? Biting the bullet puns?
