Run on vegetable oil now diesel prices are rising

Filed under: Automobiles,Food & Drink by Branko Collin @ 1:56 pm

Daily AD reports (Dutch) that supermarkets are experiencing a run on vegetable oil, which car owners use instead of diesel as fuel. Super de Boer for instance noted an increase in sales between 50 and 100% in the past months. A spokes person explains that people are also hoarding vegetable oil simply because the prices are rising. Customers try and buy as much as 15 bottles in one go.

Z24 points out (Dutch) that the price of vegetable oil is rising too, so that the difference with that of diesel has decreased: vegetable oil is currently around 1.30 euro per liter, diesel around 1.46. Oil sold as fuel is taxed differently, which explains part of the price difference.

No need to refresh car’s oil says former oil mogul

Filed under: Automobiles,Sustainability by Branko Collin @ 2:02 pm

“Refreshing your car’s oil regularly is nonsense, a myth that’s been spread by the oil and car industries for years now,” says Henk de Groot. And he should know, as he is a former CEO of Castrol Nederland. Apparently all you need to do is regularly top up the oil in your car, and check it with a special dipstick that won’t just tell you the level, but also the quality of the oil, and you should be good for hundreds of thousands of miles. Luckily for all of us, Henk de Groot just happens to have invented this magical dipstick.

De Telegraaf (Dutch) helpfully calculates that the costs of excessively refreshing your motor oil are 600 million euro per year to Dutch drivers alone, not to mention the environmental costs. “I am doing this for my grandchildren,” De Groot explains.

“But the industry’s tentacles reach far. That is why they silenced me, the interests are too big.” Nary a word about the faked moonlandings though.

I welcome links to this magic dipstick in the comments.

Superbus gets road trial in June

Filed under: Automobiles,Design by Orangemaster @ 10:26 am

The Superbus, designed by former Dutch astronaut Wubbo Ockels, will get its first road trial on 25 June. The bus, which can woosh by at 250 km/h, is set to trial run on a 27-kilometer stretch of highway between Harlingen and Leeuwarden, Friesland. The highway will of course be closed for the occasion. Ockels announced the trial last Wednesday during a meeting at the head office of transport company Connexxion, one of the sponsors of the Superbus.

And yes, the Superbus does look like the famous alien designed by the H.R. Giger.

Segway use on roads being debating today

Filed under: Automobiles,General by Orangemaster @ 9:34 am
segway1.jpg

“All the other countries around us are using Segways, why can we?” Because we aren’t forerunners when it comes to innovation, we’re the ‘wait and see’ type. And all the other countries around can buy Segways, but not necessarily use them at will. Germany, Spain, Belgium, Austria and the UK sell Segways, but this doesn’t mean they are legal there or even will be.

However, if – and that’s a big if – you can believe what Wikipedia says about bans in other countries, the Netherlands is far from being alone. Australia, Sweden, Canada, and many US states have problems and proper arguments against using Segways.

Today the Dutch government will be debating trying to impose a licence for Segways like on other motorised vehicles, a process that could take another 1.5 years and possibly see Segways legally on the road/bike paths by 2010. As for ‘countries around us’, Denmark has classified the Segway as a moped and Germany is still conducting local pilot projects, but has not made it legal yet.

However, Segway Nederland says this is all a huge delaying tactic (no kidding), which is not only hurting their business and frustrating users, but defeats the purpose of ‘going green’, a major plus point of the Segway. And what’s really annoying to Dutch Segway fans apparently is that EU rules just say let local government regulate it, we’re OK with that.

We’ll have to wait and see as well then.

Not speakerphone, Spyker phone

spyker-phone.jpg

According to the iphoneclub.nl, Dutch luxury car manufacturer Spyker presented a new mobile phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The device looks pretty much like an iPhone, has a touch screen and a small number pad. CNET, who discovered the phone at the congress, was impressed with it and described it as the best iPhone clone to date. And it’s not the first Spyker comes up with a phone either. They once had a Nokia look-a-like.

Since this phone says Spyker, it can be freely coordinated with your Porsche perfume, your Ferrari hat and your Jaguar key chain.

Le Patron, the 2CV-based kit-car

Filed under: Automobiles by Branko Collin @ 8:24 pm

Godfried van den Bergh from Ophemert, Gelderland, has been selling his Le Patron Citroën 2CV mods since 1998, but last January international recognition finally came in the shape of an invite to the Brussels Autosalon. The car kit manufacturer named after the nickname of Citroën founder André Citroën sells cabriolet coachworks for about 5000 euro. Handy car owners can then mount these coachworks on top of a 2CV chassis. It takes about 200 hours to get the job done, according to Van den Bergh.

Citroën is a French car manufacturer. Founder André Citroën was the son of Dutch emigrants. His parents added the diaresis when they moved to France: “citroen” is Dutch for lemon.

A driver from Enschede who killed a 16-year-old girl while driving under the influence of alcohol in Germany cannot be banned from driving in the Netherlands, the Dutch public prosecution department said on Thursday.

A spokesman confirmed this is the case even though the German authorities have confiscated the man’s licence. The man will only be fined for not having his licence with him if caught driving in Holland, said ANP news service.

A man and woman were found naked testing 58 erection pills in a car, police in The Hague reported today. The police noticed a car with steamed up windows parked on the street on Tuesday night. Inside were the vehicle’s 53-year-old male owner and a 19-year-old female, both naked and engaging in sex.

The two claimed they were testing different erection pills as part of an experiment, in which the young woman said she was participating voluntarily and with no financial inducements.

Police however arrested the man after finding a second drug (marijuana) in the car.

Number of classic cars and motors doubled in seven years

Filed under: Automobiles,Fashion by Branko Collin @ 4:41 pm

Illustration: a Morris Minor (1953) I saw in the Amsterdamse Bos last spring.

Daily Algemeen Dagblad reports (Dutch) that the number of old-timers in the Netherlands has doubled in seven years, with cars going from 121,000 in 2000 to 204,000 in 2007. The amount of classic motorcycles has risen even more, almost tripling from 32,000 to 94,000. Old-timers are defined as cars that are more than 25 years old.

A number of experts interviewed came up with different reasons to explain this rise. One of them suggested that it may have to do with the increased quality of cars and motorcycles; they last longer. Another thought it might have to do with taxes; owners of old-timers don’t have to pay road tax. A third guessed that the aging population may have to do with it; old people with money buying cars to be seen with.
