The Netherlands is sloppy at protecting privacy

Filed under: General,IT by Orangemaster @ 1:42 pm
privacy

The Netherlands scores a poor 21st place on the international list of countries that uphold citizens’ privacy, according to the 2007 International Privacy Ranking of Great Britain. The Netherlands is in the category labelled “systematic failure to uphold safeguards” when it comes to privacy. The Netherlands also scores poorly when it comes to ID cards and biometrics.

According to Privacy International, the Netherlands’ score is so bad because of its compulsory identification, the possibility of listening in on phone conversations (communication interception) and the obligation of storing Internet data (data sharing). If you read the section entitled ‘countries with the worse records’, the Netherlands gets nailed for its leadership, albeit along with half the EU and others.

Some highlights of the privacy problems specific to the Netherlands:

– Continued proposals to increase power of law enforcement agencies
– Plans to implement in 2008 a database of all children to record development from birth
– Compulsory identification for all persons from age of 14, where 5,300 individuals are fined every month for not carrying ID
– Courts have ruled that subscriber data can be disclosed to copyright industry, and anonymous website owners

Dam disclaimer for New Year’s concert

Filed under: General,Weird by Orangemaster @ 1:41 pm
disclaimer-dam1.jpg

I know they have surveillance cameras and some web cameras downtown Amsterdam, but walking down the street and seeing a disclaimer posted before arriving on Dam Square made me uneasy. No glass and no fireworks is understandible, but warning me about possibly being on TV, YouTube and the likes does not seem necessary. Will people actually think of sueing for being on TV without their permission? I can’t possibly imagine it has come to this in 2008. And I’ll leave the quality of the English translation alone since it’s clear enough.

Smoking ban kicks in on 1 January prematurely

Filed under: General by Orangemaster @ 8:30 am
smoking1.jpg

After all the whining and complaining about banning smoking in Dutch establishments in the media (you can still see people being interviewed smoke on TV), some 70% of hotels, restaurants and cafes plan to ban smoking in their establishments on 1 January 2008. This is surprising since the actual ban is set for 1 July 2008. According to a spokesperson of the Royal Dutch catering and hospitality organisation, implementing the ban on 1 January has psychological reasons. “Many people start their resolutions on New Year’s Day, which often includes giving up smoking.” In fact, about three quarters of Dutch hotels have had smoking bans since 2006.

And then there’s the discussion about an exception to the ban for ‘coffeeshops’, which in Dutch refers to cafes that sell weed and hasch, since the whole point is to go there and smoke.

Tell us what you think. And Happy New Year!

Major Bosshardt Day on 8 June

Filed under: Dutch first,General by Orangemaster @ 3:39 pm

It’s not a day off, but the Dutch have a new holiday on the birthday of deceased Salvation Army Major Alida Margaretha Bosshardt on 8 June. On this day an award named after her will be given to people who have a made a difference in Dutch society, according to the association Nederland Positief (Positive Netherlands). Although she was known as a Major, her rank was Lieutenant-Colonel. She was known for many good deeds including helping Jewish children during the German occupation and her work with Amsterdam prostitutes. I met her once and she was very friendly. I am surprised she gets a holiday and so are my sources.

Dutch diplomat ‘returns’ 7-year-old adopted girl

Hong Kong authorities are searching for a new home for a 7-year-old South Korean girl after the Dutch couple who adopted her just months after she was born changed their minds, officials said Tuesday. The Dutch diplomat and his wife adopted the girl seven years ago when they were living in Seoul, South Korea, but struggled to integrate her into their lives.

The diplomat handed the girl over to welfare authorities in Hong Kong last May, saying she was having trouble adapting to their culture, including their food, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to comment on the matter.

(Place jokes about Dutch food and cooking here, although I doubt it’s standard fare in Hong Kong.)

“It’s bizarre. I don’t think it has anything to do with cultural shock,” said Law Chi-kwong, an associate professor at the University of Hong Kong’s Social Work department. “The child grew up with them. They adopted her when she was a baby; they are responsible for shaping the child’s mind and culture. How can you say the child cannot adapt to the culture in which she was raised? This is just ridiculous.”

The girl speaks Chinese and English but not Korean.

(She doesn’t speak Dutch either? The plot thickens.)

The South China Morning Post, in a report Sunday, quoted the unnamed Dutch diplomat as saying that the adoption had gone wrong.

(What? Like a bad wine or something?)

I’m sure there is more to this story, but I assume that the real reasons are even less flattering that the ‘diplomatic’ ones given.)

A Dutch friend of mine adopted a Chinese girl after three years of poking and prodding and he looks very happy to me. I wonder what he would think of this.

Social advertising blog Houtlust becomes Osocio

Filed under: General by Branko Collin @ 2:25 pm

Illustration: A still from a Flash-based SOS Mata Atlântica campaign highlighted at Osocio.

The English language social advertising blog Houtlust is back from hiatus. After a re-branding it has shed its unpronounceable name Houtlust and traded it for Osocio. The concept is still the same: short, mostly graphical reviews of startling social advertising campaigns (see the example we wrote about earlier). Dutch founder Marc van Gurp has been joined by bloggers from over the world. (“Houtlust”, by the way, is a name meant to evoke the image of a pleasant wooded area, and is therefore etymologically related to the more neutral “Holland”, wooded land. In some Dutch areas, and indeed in Germany, the l in “holt” is still pronounced.)

Polite Canadians blow up Dutch ride

The Ministry of Defense got one of its blown up trucks back from Afghanistan with a note from Canadian soldiers. According to the Defense internal newspaper, the note said “Sorry we blew up your truck! But it saved two lives. Thank you very much. Canada.” The DAF XF truck was borrowed from the Dutch army and returned with an Antonov transport airplane into the Nethererlands. These things happen!

“Take the day off or be stuck in traffic”

Filed under: Automobiles,General by Orangemaster @ 7:24 am
sint1.jpg

Hang on a minute! Sure, the kids should get their presents on time for Pakjesavond, the evening before Sinterklaas, which for those new to Dutch culture is in fact more important than Christmas. But seriously, even though it sounds logical, the idea of taking an entire day off from work to avoid traffic has to be messed up. As far as I am concerned, take the rest of your working life off and avoid traffic for ever!

Basically, with the new timetable of the Dutch railways, hailed as nothing less but “chaos”, taking the train won’t get you home on time. The image of a little boy crying because he thinks Sinterklaas forgot him is something I am sure any parent wants to avoid. So you take the car to work, like many people who believe in sitting down when they travel (when trains are full at 140% capacity, you have to stand) and who don’t believe that green guilt trip (pardon the pun) about how if we all took the train, the train would magically improve and become a Disneyland ride. Cycling to work if possible is great, but does not work for everyone.

So picture a small country, a major Dutch holiday and the entire flippin’ country has some 500 km of congestion, almost twice the congestion around Paris a few weeks ago with the public transport strike. It’s not even a strike!

Conclusion: public transport blows more than ever before (Merry Christmas to you to), motorways suck big time and who cares about work? Stay home, your entire country is under siege. But by all means, enjoy the gifts.
